AERODROME SITE SECURED.

TURUTURU ROAD PROPERTY.

A. general meeting of the Hawera Aero Club was held last night, Mr. C. Freyberg presiding over a large attendance. A motion that the club be incorporated was carried.

Rules drafted by the committee were adopted. In explaining them the chairman specially mentioned a provision that the fee for pupil members was £lO 10s. He said that in the contract made for the admission and instruction of a pupil member it would be stipulated that on qualifying as a pilot he should receive a refund of £0 9s, provided he was not indebted to the club for damage to its property. A subsidy would be received from the Government for each pilot who qualified, Mr. F. Latham was appointed club captain and Mr J. W. Craig vice-captain. Dr. VV. M. Thomson and Messrs. F. Dunlop. B. McCarthy, P. Bond and F. Lysons were appointed additional vicepresidents. The members of the general committee elected previously offered their resignations and the following were elected: —Airs. Mcßae,’ Dr. W. F. Buist, Messrs. F. Lysons, C. Freyberg, VV. A. Spragg, Rod byme, VV. G. Strange, F. VV. Horner, R. P. Alorrissey, A. Ellis, VV. VV. Davy and C. Hay-Mackenzie. Regarding the work already done by the club, the chairman said the question of obtaining a ground for an aerodrome had been carefully considered and the committee had obtained an option over Air. C. F. Dunlop’s ground on the Turuturu Road. This ground had been approved, subject to an additional area being taken in to round oil the landing ground. The meeting •went into committee and on resuming reported that the general committee had been authorised to lease the ground from Air. Dunlop. The grounds committee was accorded a vote of thanks for its work. The lion, architect, Mr. J. A. Dullill, submitted plans of a hangar 60ft by 49ft, to be of corrugated iron. He said the building was planned to take the largest type of machine likely to be seen in New Zealand for some time.

The architect's proposals were referred to the committee with the favourable endorsement of the members and Mr. Duffili was thanked for his services. The secretary, Mr. VV. G. Walkley, reported there were 252 members on the roll. Subscriptions and donations amounted to £212 2s, and the amount still to come in was £lO3. On behalf of the membership committee Dr. Buist acknowledged the kindness of the Vacuum Oil Company in enabling the club lo obtain a stand at the winter show at which a number of members had been enrolled. It was now proposed, he said, to hold meetings in various country centres, the committee aiming to obtain at least 500 members. Votes of thanks were passed to the Vacuum Oil Company and to all who had offered assistance in connection with Captain MacGregor’s, projected display at the racecourse.

NEW ZEALAND FARMERS’ UNION. MEETING OF MATAPU BRANCH. A meeting of the Matapu branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on July 8, the president (Mr. W. T. Seed) presiding over a fair attendance. ' Arrangements were made for the annual social and dance to bo held next Friday, July 19. All members are keen to make this year’s social the success it usually is, and with the aid of Sait’s orchestra and the assistance of the local ladies are certain this will be accomplished. Messrs. Les. Preece and Fred. Palmer were appointed M’s.C. at the function. It was decided to follow the usual custom of the branch and give prizes to the school children gaining first, second and third places in their root and calfrearing competitions, namely, 10s first, 7s fid second and 5s third. The following donations were received from members for this purpose: Mr. W. T. Seed £1 Is, Mrs. Les. Preece 10s, Mr. W. D. Graham 10s. A hearty vote of thanks was carried to the donors. Mr. Seed reported that the secretary (Mr. Treweek) had at the animal meeting notified his intention of resigning his office, which all members very much regretted. He had only been carrying on until the branch was able to secure another secretary. Mr. George Downie was subsequently elected secretary, to take office after the annual social. Mr. Downie thanked members for the confidence placed in him.

A motion that the branch donate the sum of two guineas towards the earthquake relief fund was carried. It was resolved to invite the management of the Patea Farmers’ Freezing Uo. to address farmers of the Matapu district re the. bobby calf business at an early date. MATAPU NEWS. SUCCESSFUL BALL HELD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very successful ball was held in the Matapu Hall on Thursday night, when about 150 couples took the floor to music supplied by Coburn’s Star Orchestra. Visitors were present from Opunake, Kaponga, Hawera and Elthain. During the evening novelty dances were held, the winners being Mr. W. Gatenby and partner, the second Monte Carlo being won by Mr. F. Gatenby and partner. Extras were supplied by Misses M. Startup, B. Seed and M. Guy. An excellent supper was served by the local ladies.

The fortnightly euchre and dance was held last Tuesday in the Alatapu Hall, but the attendance was lower than usual owing to the amount of sickness in the district. The winners of the euchre tournament were: Ladies, Mrs. B. Harrison; men, Mr. R. Cleaver (Te Roti); consolation, Miss Pratt and Mr. E. Guy. After supper the hall was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Miss M. Guy and extras by Misses B. Seed. D. Fowler and M. Startup. Mr. T. Huekstep was M.C. PERSONAL ITEMS. « Miss D. Fowler, Waitara, is spending her vacation with Mr. and Mrs. F. Hoskin. Mr. and Mrs. O’Sullivan and Kathleen are spending a week at the racing carnival id Wellington. Mr. and Mrs W. naia after a visit to Mr. and Airs. W. A. Guy. Mr. Geo. Preece left yesterday on a visit to Honolulu. MOKOIA NOTES. SCHOOL TENNIS COURTS. The concert organised by the Alokoia school committee, and held on Wednesday evening, proved very successful. The performers were drawn from the Hawera Scottish Socoiety, and they presented a varied and much appreciated programme, the audience recalling every performer. Songs were rendered by Airs. Sutherland and Air. Simpson, elocutionary items by Airs. Twaddle. Aliss Clements, and Air. D. McCormick. Scottish dances were given by Alisses Jean Alacasey, Norma Nixon, Doreen Nairn and Nora Rothery (Whakamara), the programme ending with the comedy entitled “The Crystal Set.” Air. J. E. Campbell, while acting as chairman for the concert party, told many of his humorous anecdotes. On behalf of the school committee, Air. D. S. Richardson expressed sincere thanks to the concert party for travelling from Hawera, and giving such an excellent entertainment. This was heartily endorsed by all present. After supper dancing was enjoyed until midnight. The music was supplied by Mrs. B. Lee. Extras were played by AF’S J. Lander and Mr. Richardson, while Air. S. J.
