Misses Eileen and Kathleen Goodson, of Wellington, are spending a ’ few' days in Hawera. ■ They arrived yesterday in order to attend the assembly dance held last night.

Miss Czeske Uniacke, of Stratford, was the guest of Mrs. George Meyrick for the assembly last evening, and will return home after the week-end.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Glasson, who had been spending some days in Wellington, returned home on Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Moginie, of Auckland, is the guest of her daughter, Miss Vera Moninic, in Albion Street. n # # # #

Mrs. Morpeth was hostess at two tables of bridge on Tuesday evening, when those present were Mrs. R. F. Page, Mrs. Woodward, Mrs. C. Freyberg, Mrs. Channing Tonks, Mrs. Scott, Miss Caplen and Miss McLean. # * * #

Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Hawken, who have been visiting their son in the Malay States, returned home during the week. Miss Edna Hawken, who has been abroad for about two years, met her people in Malaya and made the homeward journey with them. # # *

The members of St. Mary’s sewing guild held a social afternoon on Friday last which proved a splendid success, a large number gathering in the happy circle. During the afternoon vocal and elocutionary items were received with much enthusiasm.

Mrs. J. B. Murdoch was hostess at a very pleasant afternoon at her home, South Road, on Wednesday of last week, when she entertained a number of friends at tea. Mrs. Murdoch wore a smart afternoon toilette of navy blue. Miss Ethel Murdoch assisted her mother. Among those present were Mrs. A. Murdoch, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. David Strachan, Mrs. Adamson, Miss A. Cameron, Miss J. Slattery, Miss G. Leech and Miss M. Sutton.

A very jolly little afternoon’s entertainment was given at the Hawera infant school on Thursday afternoon, when some sixty mothers —and a few fathers —gathered to witness with pride the accomplishments, both in unison and individual work, of the very tiny tots. The unspoilt eagerness and confidence of the little ones in displaying their talents was indeed a pleasure in itself. Quite a reasonable amount was obtained by the small charge made, and a very happy afternoon spent. # * * *

Under the auspices of the Women’s National Reserve a “sympathetic committee” was formed, and during the past two weeks has done wonderful work in the raising of funds to help the people in the earthquake-stricken districts. By every manner and means the shillings have been collected up—dance, euchre party, copper trail, shop day, and shilling drive, together with straight-out donations all assisting, and to-day the secretary is handing in to the Mayor’s fund £l9O, which is to be supplemented by still further amounts to come in on Monday. It is expected that the total sum reached will be something over £2OO. Quite a considerable and creditable sum for this band of very willing and ardent workers, under the leadership of the Mayoress, Mrs. Pacey, as president. Mns. J. N. Henry acted as secretary throughout.

Mrs. C. R. Davies was hostess at a farewell afternoon on Friday of last week in honour of Mrs. Smith, who is leaving Manaia shortly. The hostess

met her guests attired in ft mushroom beige afternoon frock, trimmed with a darker self-tone. Mrs. Smith’s frock was of sky-blue crepe-de-chine, rainbowtrimmed.
