MATAU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual fortnightly euchre party was held in the Alatau Hall on June 28. The ladies’ prize was annexed by Miss M. Larsen (Matau) and the men’s prize by Air. W. Bertrand (Purangi). The new cards, donated by Air. and Airs. P. Rolfe, made a great difference to the enjoyment of the playing. A very pleasant dance followed, music being supplied by Messrs. W. Bertrand, A. Smellie and O. Wolfsbauer.

The frosts, followed by rain, are playing havoc with the roads, and the cuttings and shady bends are beginning to get very muddy, making one realise that we are nearing the depth of winter. A gang of men are repairing the road between the low level bridges of _..itau and Waitara.

The road to Kiorc is blocked by road alterations, and all traffic is carried over tho Matau and Purangi saddles. Quite a crowd from here went over to Purangi on Friday night to the euchie party and dance held by the football club.' The men’s euchre prize was won by a Matauite, Mr. O. Wolfsbauer, the ladies’ prize being won by Mrs S. George (Tarata). The dance which followed was a great credit to the organisers. The Rev. H, S. Hamilton, of Wanganui, has been appointed the vicar of the parochial district of Tarhnaki East. He will commence his duties early in September. It is to be hoped that that month will not be as rough as usual, and so give the vicar a cold and wet welcome to his new district. Our last vicar got the ’flu during his first fortnight here, and had to go into.a private hospital. When he recommenced work a horseback accident again laid him low but thereafter his two and a half years of service hero was free of incident. A slight earthquake shock was felt here at 6.15 p.m. on Saturday last. Miss M. Larsen has returned from Purangi, where she has been tho guest of her sister, Mrs. J. S. Fletcher. Mr E. Evans, who has been the guesof Ida son, Mr. T. Evans, New Plymouth, has returned to Matau. Mr. H. Maingay spent last week-end in New Plymouth.
