FINE ACRE FALLS IN HURDLES. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. While the course conditions at Trentham for t'he opening of the Wellington winter meeting to-day were heavy the day was fine and, though cold, it was not unpleasant. The racing, as is always the- case at Trentham, was excellent. Fine Acre, Horomea and Amorist were evenly backed in the Vittoria Hurdles. Glena Bay lost its rider at the first fence. Fine Acre took the lead and was joined at the mile by Amorist. The pair went away from the field and were leading by a dozen lengths when Fine Acre fell two fences from home. Amorist then won by six lengths from Horomea, with Master Doon ten lengths away third and Grand National next. Fine Acre would have won but for the mishap. Horomea jumped badly early in the race. WOBURN TO MARK MINT. In the Woburn Handicap, Golden Shadow, El Boa and Juggle led on to the course proper from Havering and Mark Mint, and in a good finish MarkMint won by a head, with Juggle a close third and Glyn Dhu fourth. The riding of Goldfinch aiid Ellis had a lot to do with the decision. Havering might be improved by the race. WAITAUNAHA'S VICTORY. San Fera and Boomerday were at the head of the Hack Steeplechase field when half the journey 'had been covered, but along the back Waitaunaha was taken to the front and led into the straight from Aurora Borealis and Alaric. Waitaunaha won 'by three lengths from Alaric, with Aurora Borealis some distance away third and Koauau next. Glendowie and Sir Moment were always at the rear and Sir Moment did not complete the course. Vindication fell heavily at the second fence. The winner paid double figures.

BLACK DUKE LASTS BEST. Black Duke finished up a better favourite than Taboo and Billikins for the Stewards’ Handicap. Billikins led on to the course proper from Oration, Sudden Storm and Black Duke. Black Duke finished well under pressure and won by a length from Marble King, with Kaiti

a head away and Billikins a close fourth. Black Duke’s condition saw him through. Taboo is one of the runners who will be the better for the race. Sudden Storm 'had every chance to-day, but also might be improved. Kaiti ran a great race. KING’S GUARD’S STEEPLECHASE The Wellington Steeplechase was a good race despite the supposed weakness of the field. Nukumai was favourite. Passing the stands the first time Kauri Park had charge from Brigadier Bill, Fabriano, Nukumai, and Radiate. As they came round again Fabriano and King’s Guard led from Brigadier Bill, Kawini, Radiate and Nukumai. Kawini moved up fast five furlongs from home, but Fabriano and King’s Guard led him and Brigadier 'Bill into the straight, and in a head and head finish all the way King's Guard won by half a head. Kawini was six lengths away third, and Matu, Radiate and Maunga were next. Brigadier Bill jumped badly in the later stages of the race. King’s Guard would have been unlucky to lose, as Fabriano bored him badly in the straight. OVERHAUL BEATS MISTER GAMP. Prince Lu led the Trentham Hurdles field at a great pace. He was followed through the straight by Elysianor, Beaumont, Aberfeldy, Peshwa, Comical, Overhaul, Troilus and Mister Gamp. Prince Lu led all the way to the straight, where Aberfeldy, Overhaul and Comical were handy. Overhaul took charge in the straight ’but Hobson had to draw the whip to keep off the fast-finishing Mister Gamp, who was only half a length away as the post was passed. Elysianor was three lengths away third and next were Prince Lu and Aberfeldy. Mister Gamp should go well in the Winter Hurdles if he jumps well.

PADDON’S EASY VICTORY. When the Held for the Whyte Memorial Handicap settled down Paddon had charge, and he led into the straight from° Taneriri, Fairy Herald and Singleton. Paddon drew away and won easily by three lengths from Taneriri, with Singleton third and Merry Mint, Fairy Herald and Ruauui next. Merry Mint should win soon. MONEY MINT PAYS DIVIDEND. The Te Aro Hack Handicap resulted in the success of an outsider and a big dividend. Money Mint, Justify, Merle and Imateagirl were prominent to tile straight, where Money Mint ran .on best and won ‘by a head from Justify, with Royal Black a good third and Royal ,Opera, Marjoram and Hard Gold next. TRIAL PLATE. Six furlongs. , Arrow Zone Kall Air Laddie Lady Rene Acredity Loving Cup Blue Paper Le Champ Great Lady Mahora Golden Shadow Money Mint Hopwood Shortly Hurly Burly Zareno TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. (By “Moturoa.”) FINE ACRE was . unlucky yesterday and the shorter distance will suit him better to-day. He may make the pace too hot for Horomea at least. # * # # Marjoram and Glyn Dhu both “missed” yesterday, but they may do better to-day, However. MAORI BOY may be preferred to them. ® # a AURORA BOREALIS may do better than Waitaunaha at the difference in weights, but Royal Elm is not badly treated. # ® Taranaki punters will find Bisox and Anolo dividing their attention and, while both are sure to run good races TOWN BANK may upset the pot. # # # * KING’S JEST has struck form and is likely to be well supported to-day, while Courageous and Nukumai will have their quota of admirers. ss> # * # KAITI seems to be coming back to form and may be preferred to Marble King, who is consistent. # ft # © HAVERING was unlucky yesterday and Taranaki punters may again prefer him to Bulolo and Mark Mint.

STIORTLY’S, form at the Hawke’s Bay meetings was good, and that may be the cause of more support for the Hymestra gelding than for Hopwood and Zarenc. Money Mint won well yesterday, but Shortly appears io be a galloper of class. DATES FOR TARANAKI It is understood that the recommendations of the dates comisittee to the Racing Conference this week will not suggest any change in the dates of the Taranaki summer meetings, so that the Egmont Racing Club’s fixture will fall on January 30 and February 1 and the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting a week later. As the Takapuna Club races are on January 29 the Taranaki clubs would have preferred to hold their meetings a week after the dates now allotted. The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting will be held at the usual time. ’
