A temporary failure of the steering gear caused the steamer Hobson Bay, which was starting for Australia, to ram the jetty at Thames Haven, crush* ing a pontoon like matchwood and Sink* ing two barges. The damage is estimated at £50,000. j. Six men working on the barges saw the danger and reached the shore befoti,’. the collision.
