ECONOMIC POSITION HOPEFUL.

Although Australia is passing through a period of economic depression there are signs of the position improving, declares the Commonwealth Statistician (Air. C. Hickens). The latest trade figures for the financial year just ended indicate there will be a balance of exports over imports of about £5,000,000. Aligration was lower last year than for years. The birth rate also was lower and the death rate was higher. He added that periods of depression were always accompanied by a lower birth rate and a higher death rate.
