MR. MASTERS’ APPOINTMENT

WORK ON TRANSPORT BOARD. “CHEAP AND NASTY” CRITICISM. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. “Cheap and nasty” were the deprecating terms used by Mr. F. Lye in the House to-day in describing the allegations made by the member for Riccarton (Mr. H. S. S. Kyle) that the present Government had appointed its supporters to positions on public bodies in place of men who had rendered efficient service.

Mr. Lye referred particularly to the question given notice of by Mr. Kyle as to whether the Mr. Masters who had been appointed chairman of the Transport Board was the late chairman of the United Party. “Why try and mislead the people?” Mr. Lye asked. The han. member must have known that the services rendered by the late member for Stratford were being given gratuitously. Why, then, this veiled attack and quiet sarcasm? To suggest that the late member was being paid for his services was cheap and very nasty.” A voice: Was theije any pay attaching to it?

Mr. D. McDougall: He did not say here was not. (Laughter.)
