"ALL CAN STIR UP MUD”

“SPOILS TO VICTORS” CRITICISM. By Telegraph.—Press association. Wellington, Last Night. (By Wire —Parliamentary Reporter.) ‘‘lt is not wise at this juncture to start a debate on political patronage,” declared Mr. A. Hamilton (Wallace) in the House of Representatives to-day when expressing regret that the mover of the Address-in-Reply (Air. W. A. Bodkin) had made certain charges against the previous administration in connection with land aggregation. Air. Hamilton said he took it to be the usual thing for the mover and seconder of the Address-in-Reply to confine themselves to defence of the programme of their party and to deal with points in the Speech from the Throne item by item. Little had been said at the opening of the present debate about the United Party’s election manifesto, even if something had been said about the Governor-General’s speech. Ho was sorry the charges against the previous Government had been brought in, including the allegation of “spoils to the victors.”

“If yon stir up the mud we can all poke a stick into it,” said Mr. Hamilton. “None of us are. so free that we can accuse everyone else and remain'untainted ourselves.” -
