MIRACULOUS ESCAPE

DRIVER PINNED UNDER LORRY. A motor lorry driven by Mr. E. Hunt, of New Plymouth, overturned on the Main South Road near Warca a short time before noon on Monday. The driver had a miraculous escape from death. The lorry, which was owned by Mr. F. H. Roebuck, Okato, capsized after running on to the loose shingle at the side of the road and the driver was pinned underneath. The lorry -was fully loaded with three tons of bagged slag. Though no one witnessed the accident it was not long before helpers had arrived, but tho work of extracting the driver from his precarious position required tho combined efforts of several men and a long plank used as a lever. After the driver had been rescued, Mr. Shaw, a Pungarehu farmer, drove him to Okato, while the lorry, which had dented mudguards and a smashed cab, was towed to a garage. A strained and bruised arm were the only injuries sustained by the driver, although he might have been suffocated if the rescuers had not arrived on the scene so opportunely. Mr. Hunt, it is stated, was forced off the road by a car travelling at high speed towards Okato.
