BURGLARY IN HAWERA AGAIN

TOBACCONIST'S SHOP ENTERED. REAR WINDOW SMASHED. Burglary has occurred again in Hawcra. Through the back door or a window opened by means of a catch operated through broken glass someone vet unknown entered the hairdressing premises of Mr. A. Elgar, High Stieet. Hawera, during the week-end. Goods from the shop and small items of cash were stolen. . . The rear of the shop consists of a small yard bordered on four aides by walls 10 feet high and more. The only convenient access is a small alley with a locked gate on the street frontage. The padlock was intact yesterday. Failing entry by the alley tho roofs would need to be scaled. The business premises on I either side were not tampered with. NORMANBY FACTORY ADDITIONS PROVISION FOR 16 CHEESE VATS. I Five limes the Normanby Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., has had to make additions to its premises to cope with the expanding business. The most recent additions were made this year, the work just having been completed. The factory has now 'l3 vats —two more than last season—and the present floor space makes provision for a total of 16 vats, which will bo brought into use as required. The whole interior of the old building has been remodelled, an old curing room and packing room having been converted into the" main room and a wall down the middle demolished. Tho work has been carried out by Mr. A. Brown, Hawera, and was performed without any interference with cheese-making operations. An additional wing, 85ft. by 30ft., containing a new curing room and packing room has been erected, making the building complete. ; The Normanby company lias been one I of Taranaki's most successful concerns and its record of progress has been a credit both to the management and to suppliers. The advance pay-out over the whole season amounts to Is 9d per lb butter-fat and it is anticipated that this will be exceeded when the payments for the season are completed. GENERAL ITEMS,

A story concerning the constitution of the Eltham county was told by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., at the dinner to Mr. C. J. Belcher on Monday night. The county almost had a disaster at birth, said Mr. Wilkinson. Taranaki’s representative in Parliament at that time, Mr. Major, Hawera, objected to the Bill authorising the establishment of the county, and Mr. (now Sir Walter) Carncross was very active in support of it. When the Bill came before the Local Bills Committee a bare quorum was present, and if Mr. Major had merely walked out of the room he could have killed the Bill. He chose, however,, to move an amendment to the effect that tho county should not be constituted until the people of the districts concerned had had a vote on the question. Mr. Carncross shrewdly permitted the Bill to be reported to the House with the amendment. He had plenty of friends in the House and was able to get the amendment lopped off and the Bill passed in its original form. PARIHAKA SHIELD RUGBY. MAORI REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.
