INGLEWOOD BOROUGH

.MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Inglewood Borough Council met last night, there being present the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Winfield, and Councillors F. Spurdie, R. B. Sutton, W. 11. Armstrong and J. Gibbs. Leave of absence was granted Crs. B. Larson and I. P. Grant. The electrical engineer, Mr. IL Winter, reported that the number of units registered at the sub-station for the month was 36,468 and for June of last year 35,058 units were registered. This showed an increase of 1410 units over the corresponding month of last year. The maximum load registered for the quarter was 120 k.w., as. against 12a k.w. for the corresponding period of last year. The wiring of the dairy factory was progressing satisfactoiily. The numocr of additional points installed for the month was 11 lighting, two heating and one 2 h.p. motor. Owing to the fuse boxes on the sub-station opposite Lamb’s garage breaking down the light was interrupted during the heavy loading hours. This fault was remedied by installing new fuse boxes. The street lighting brackets to be erected were due to arrive within the next few days. In his monthly report the oversee!, Mr. W. Devereux, stated that all the loose stones on the streets had been raked off. The culvert on Kalnkatea Street at Blackbourne’s entrance had been attended to, also the fence across the Waiomiona-iti at the Childien s Park. Konini Street had been dressed with chins and screenings and watertables cleaned. A section of Standish Street had been graded and made ready for metalling. Elliott Street was being prepared for metalling and would be finished in a few days. The weather during the month had been much against this class of work. Advice was received from the Taranaki Automobile Association that a number of motorists were still dnvino- with improperly focussed headlights and the association requested the council to arrange for its traffic inspector to insist on the regulation being enforced. The Feilding Borough Council wrote stating that it had passed the following resolution, a copy of which had been forwarded to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Public Works and the member-for the district: “That the council requests that the Government will, durin" the coming session, cause such amending legislation to be enacted ana win empower the Main Highways Board to make annual grants horougns having a population of under 6000, as have expended loan moneys, in laying down with permanent materials, certain streets which form part of main highways, that the benefit of such annual grants be made available to such boroughs during the present financial, year, and that the amount, and duration of such grants be determined by the Mam Highways Board upon ascertaining the amount of such loan moneys so expended and when expended.” A copy of the statement setting out the reasons for the request was enclosed. The Mayor stated that Inglewood was in sympathy with th© project, and. the council decided to forward a copy of the resolution to the member for. the district and the Minister of Public Works. The Mayor and Or. Gibbs were appointed the council’s delegates to the committee formed for the purpose of advancing aviation in the Dominion.
