With reference to the extra freight rate on cargo on the Surrey from New York to New Plymouth, the Union Steamship Company replied to the chamber that it had communicated with the agent of the Australian and American Line. He had advised that -so far as he knew the additional rate was four dollars Writing concerning freight rates on timber from the Pacific Coast, the Union Company said it was understood the freight to New Plymouth direct had not been increased' from 23 dollars per 1000 feet to 25 dollars. As iar as the freight to W’eliington was concerned, the writer had no knowledge of a reduction. A suggestion from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce that joint representations by the chambers concerned should be made to the shipping companies with a view to obtaining for the principal secondary ports main port rates on cargo from the Pacific Coast was referred to the shipping committee. The letter explained that the proposal was for the removal of th© existing additional charge of three dollars on general cargo and 15 cents a case on petroleum products. The proposal for the separation of cargoes of slag at loading ports was referred to the railway and shipping committee. The general secretary of the teachers’ summer school to bo held in January wrote asking for the co-operation of the chamber in forwarding the object of creating a wider public interest in education through the medium of a series of public lectures by eminent men. At least 300 teachers from all parts of the Dominion would attend, it was said. Mr. List said this was a movement of some importance. He suggested the chamber should, do all it could towards associating itself with the activities of the school to be held in New Plymouth. It might, perhaps, work in conjunction with the Tourist and Expansion League. It was decided to defer further consideration of the question until next meeting, when information will have been obtained regarding ways in which the Tourist League and Chamber might co-operate.
