IMPROVEMENTS AT PARIHAKA

BETTER SANITARY SCHEME. The sanitary conditions at the Parihaka pa are at present engaging the attention of the Health Department. The department has been faced with two difficult problems; to decide where the money shall come from and who are the owners of the land in question. To remedy the primitive state of the sanitary arrangements as soon as possible it will be necessary to obtain a grant from the Department of Native Affairs. However, this may have to be deferred until Sir Apirana Ngata visits the district. On Friday at a, conference held at Mr. Atua’s, Moturoa, the question of providing better sanitation at Parihaka with the aid of the Natives from the pa was discussed by Mr. T. Hooper, the Native inspector attached to the Health Department. The difficulties with which the department was faced were explained along with an outline of the temporary improvements which could be carried out by the Natives themselves. The scheme proposed by the Health Department was agreed to, and appreciation of the measure's to be taken was expressed by all present. Recently some improvements were effected at Manakorihi (Wait-ara), and the department is now directing its attention to [Parihaka pa.
