AWATUNA TOPICS

GENERAL ITEMS. The score of 14 to nil, the margin by which the Makaka school beat the Awatuna Rugby team last Thursday, was a fair indication of the afternoon’s play. The Makaka team had a very decided advantage in weight and well deserved its victory, although when the return match is played next week it would not be surprising if there is not a much smaller difference between the .scores, as some of the Awatuna youngsters show great promise. Though the attendance at the hall dance last Friday was not as great as the promoters of the dance would have wished, music by Coburn’s Star orchestra was responsible for good dancing on a not very crowded floor. The’ majority of the Awatuna settlers was represented but rival attractions at neighbouring halls no doubt accounted for the small number of outside visitors. Tne spot waltz and the Alonte Carlo proved as popular’ as ever. The programme was capably directed by the AI.C., Air. D. Lind. Aliss I. Corbett and Miss A. Collins played well chosen extras. The supper arrangements testified to the good work done . by the ladies’ committee. The school committee met last Tuesday. Air. H. Davison presided. From the head teacher’s report it was shown that bad weather and colds-had been responsible for a low attendance during the month. The committee agreed it was time that the children were provided with cocoa again as has been the practice during the winter months of other years. The head teacher (Air. C. Arthur) reported that the septic conveniences had been completed by the Education Board and were working efficiently. The violent weather on Saturday was responsible for the small number who attended the meeting to consider what could be done locally to raise money | for the earthquake relief fund. It has been arranged to make a house to house collection, for which purpose Airs. Niccolls and Air. H. Davison have offered their ears. Air. H. Bailey has consented to canvass the Auroa and upper Eltham roads on Tuesday and Air. E. Hutchings the lower Eltham and Oeo Roads on Monday. The excitement of the school children last Friday morning was intense when an aeroplane circled round on its way to Okato, keeping fairly low and appearing to be quite close. The sunny morning and the blue sky threw out the plane in bold relief, particularly when it performed several “flips.” The entries put into the South Taranaki show by the Awatuna school, con- J sisting of seedling and two-year-old ] trees, were awarded two first prizes and a second. The school basketball team will visit Alakaka school next Wednesday, where the match will be played at the school. This is the Awatuna team’s first match.
