WAIMATE WEST COUNTY

RAILWAY WARNING SIGNS. WORK ON THE ROADS. The monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council was held yesterday, Air. E. Long presiding. The county engineer, Air. J. A. Hansen, reported that during the month 7u yards of stone purchased from Air. Lowe had been crushed. This was to be used for maintenance in different portions of the county. Fifty yards of metal had been crushed for the town board, while the crusher was in town. The crusher was now working at Rama Road, where there were 350 yards to crush and 35 chains of road to re face. Alaintenance work had been carried out on Alangawhero, Auroa, Oeo, Skeet, Omuturangi, Dingle and Inaha Roads. .A letter was received from the secretary of the Otakeho School Committee (Mr. A. P. Edwards) stating:—“The committee wishes to tender its sincere thanks and appreciation of the work you so kindly did at the school gates. It has made a great improvement at the school and is much appreciated both by the scholars and the committee, as the committee meetings are held after dark and it saves walking through a lot of mud to reach the school.” The chairman: “It is very nice that someone appreciates what we are doing.” A letter was received from the district railways engineer drawing attention to the regulations requiring local authorities to be responsible for erecting warning crosses on each side of railway crossings. The engineer pointed out that with--1 in the county they had one compulsory stop —the railway crossing at Ani-oa Road. Or. Stevenson: “There was nearly a full-stop with me there one day!” C'rs. Buxton and le Fleming mentioned that they also had had narrow escapes at this crossing. The matter of erecting the necessary signs was left In the hands of the engineer. The question of the council’s liability for the Rama Road drain was brought up by Cr. Stevenson, who considered the question should he closed for all time. “We have done our job and have done it well. If the ratepayers were reasonable they would have appreciated it.” On the motion of Ore. AlcKay ana Buxton the matter of giving the settlers a detailed account of the amount expended by the council in connection with the drain was left in the hands of the engineer and elerk. The chairman pointed out that only the chairman was entitled to represent the county on the Alain Highways Council. In the event of the illness or absence of the county’s representative the council could not appoint a substitute with voting power to represent it. The only method would be to appoint a deputy-chairman, who could thus act for the absent Chairman. Cr. Stevenson was unanimously elected deputy-chairman. The question of relief for earthquake sufferers was discussed at length, the various .speakers hoping residents would respond liberally to the subscription lists. Cr. Leslie drew attention to water crossing Glenn Road, and the need for more filling at the new concrete bridge on Skeet Road. The engineer said these would be attended to, as would the finishing of the old railway crossing at Kapuni. It was resolved to take steps to compel owners to clear gorse growing on the roadside on Alitchell Road. EARTHQUAKE FUNDS. CONCERT AT HAWERA.
