MAN CUT OFF OWN HAND

Depressed by solitude or suffering from temporary delusions, a man named May, engaged on a bush contract on a station near Gisborne, is believed t< Lave attempted to take his owl life last week, leaving what, was evidently intended to be a last, letter to hii mate, written in his own blood. On returning to camp in the evening the mate discovered the man with both wrists cut and bleeding, and he succeeded in persuading the injured man to allow him to attend to his injuries; but subsequently, during the absence of the mate, the apparently demented man cut off one of his hands at the wrist.
