DEPARTURE FROM KARACHI

The Southern Cross airmen spent yesterday repairing the engines and departed this morning for Bunder Abbas. A whole day was spent in overhauling the engine with R.A.F. mechanics. The Southern Cross left at 5.55 a.m. on the eighth stage of the flight from Sydney to England. If the overhaul at Karachi had been completed quickly the plane would have left there on Friday for Bagdad. The fliers proposed to leave there at 9 a.m. on Sunday for Rome, a non-stop flight, and to leave Rome at 6 a.m. on Tuesday for the final 80 miles to Croydon. The monoplane, with Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith, Flight-Lieutenant C. T. P. Ulm (co-pilots), Mr. H. A. Litchfield (navigator) and Mr. T. H. McWilliams (wireless operator), left Richmond; Sydney, on June 22. The details of the flight, which promises to eclipse Mr. Bert Hinkler’s record of 15J days to Australia, are • — June 25. —Left Richmond, Sydney, for Derby, Western Australia, about 2100 miles. June 26.—Arrived at Derby after flight of 22 hours 5 minutes. June 27.—Left Derby for Singapore, about 2020 miles. June 28. —Arrived at Singapore. June 29. —Left Singapore and landed at Singora, about 458 miles. June 30. —Arrived at Rangoon, Burma, from Singora, about 690 miles. j u [y 2. —Left Rangoon and arrived at Calcutta, about 660 miles. July 3. —Flew from Calcutta to Allahabad. July 4. —Left Allahabad 11.55 a.m. for Karachi. Arrived Karachi 4 p.m. July e.—Left Karachi 5.55 a.m. for Bunder Abbas, at the top of the Gulf of Oman, approximately 700 miles.
