REPORTS OF MONTH’S WORK. COUNCIL MEETING’S DECISIONS. “Shingle has been delivered at Whakamara and on the Nonnanby-Okaiawa Road, while metal for patching has been dumped at the upper end of Meremere.” reported Mr. A. Muggeridge, engineer, at the Hawera County Council’s meeting on Saturday. There was now a continuous stretch of metal on the Matangara Road as the gaps had been metalled. The Mokowai Road had been metalled to Mr. Corrigan’s gate and rolled and blinded. The corner on the Whareroa Road near the dam had been taken back six feet. As the ground was very soft and full of springs, the road would shortly have to be metalled to the full width. The Division Road at Okaiawa had been metalled for a further ten chains, rolled and blinded. All settlers on the road now had metal to their properties. The McLean Road was being scarified. Little metal was now left apart from boulders, which were being broken and applied where necessary. The remainder of the work had been general maintenance. Very little metal could be carted on account of the bad spell of weather experienced. ANNUAL RECURRING RATE. Permission was granted the Taranaki Timber Company, Ltd., to transport timber on county roads in the Mokoia district on condition that any extraordinary damage to the roads was made good. The council’s representations to the New Zealand Comities Association in regard to the annual recurring separate rate for fire protection revenue would be considered at the next meeting of the executive, the association advised by letter A request that the Mangapoua Road metalling be completed as far as Mr. Beamish’s gate, as promised by the council two years ago, was made by Messrs. W. J. Stephenson, H. R. Johnston, S. Beamish, W. Johnston and G. W. Gane.- The road was said to be in a very bad condition. The work is to be done as soon as possible. Mr. W. C. Clement has been appointed by tlie Governor-General the representative of the Hawera and Eltham counties on the New Plymouth Harbour Board, advised the Marine Department. Metalling of the following roads was decided upon, on the motion of Cr. G. W A. Williams:—Manawapou, Allan, Rimutoto, Lysaght, Lake, Upper Meremere (7 chains). Upper Kakapirau ana Ingahape. Two new lorries were needed, UT. Winks said. He was satisfied that a great deal of road work was being left undone owing to transport difficulties. Cr. Williams supported that contention. Cr. Washer successfully moved that two new lorries be purchased by the chairman, provided suitable financial arrangements could be made deferring full remittance until .next financial year. All councillors were present, Cr. J. B. Murdoch presiding. ONE-ARMED MAN’S CHANCE. John William Watson Pollock, a middle-aged man who has lost an arm, was charged at the Hawera Police Court on Saturday with being idle and disorderly. , Sergeant Henry stated the accused had obtained through misrepresentation board and lodging at two houses in Hawera and owed £1 5s and Ss on that account. , Mr. Smart, who appeared for the accused, said he had been an Imperial Army man and in 1918 had lost his right arm as a result of war service. He had since been a drover, but recently had been drinking to excess. He could obtain work at Patea and was anxious to do so. •Mr. S. Blake, J.P., who was on the bench, said the court must protect people whose business necessitated thengiving credit, but he would not be hard on a° one-armed ex-soldier. He convicted the accused and discharged him, on condition that the two amounts owing for board and lodging are paid within two months. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. HAWERA CLUB’S BUTTONS. The members of the Hawera Miniature Rifle Club fired on Friday night for the club buttons. The ladies’ button was won by Miss T. Ingram, who tied with Mrs. F. Rae, each making 47, Miss Ingram winning the shoot-off by 49 to 48. Miss J. Rae secored 46, Miss E. Rae 46 and Miss K. Petersen 42. The men’s button was transferred Jrom J. Vinten to T. Holter, the scores Peeing.— T. Hotter 49, J. Vinten 48, A. Wilson 48, A. Elgar 47, G. Harding 46, J, Vinten 45. The holder of the B. button, J. Tapp, was able to retain the trophy, the scores being. —J. Tapp 49, C. Dingle 48, G. Gibson 48, A. Thrush 44, R. Evans 43. The club is entering ladies’ and men s teams for the New Zealand championships, to be fired from July 15 to 27. ALARM WARNING TO COME. TAWHITI CROSSING ARRANGEMENT Tawhiti railway crossing is on the department’s list of those at which it is intended to instal warning alarms, advised Mr. P. Keller, Public Works Department engineer at Stratford, in . a letter to the Hawera County Council’s meeting on Saturday. Other crossings on the same list were considered more dangerous, Mr. Keller stated, and alarms would be installed there first. A crossing-keeper was considered by th© department not to be warranted.
