WORK PERFORMED LAST MONTH.

Among the more important construction works carried out by the Main Highways Board during December were: Stratford - Taumarunui. — Paparata Saddle-County Boundary: A tender has been accepted for metalling work, and a commencement has been made. Tokirima-County Boundary: ’Widening and reformation has been continued, eight chains having been completed during the month. Te Maire-Mangaoliutu. —Four and ahalf chains of formation has been completed, and tenders have been called for

nine miles of metalling. Auckland-Wellington, via Taranaki (No. 7 highway district).—MahocnuiMokau: Fifteen’'and a-half chains of I this section have been re-metalled and surface-sealed, and a further 18| chains have been sealed eastwards from. Awakino township. Further widening of the formation is in hand near Awakino. Mokau-Pukearuhe: . A length of 52 chains of this section has been sealed during the month. Seventeen chains of widening has been carried out. Uruti Stream bridge: The fabrication of the piles for this bridge is in hand, and. a temporarv bridge is under construction. Clifton County section: Work on the Waiau deviation and bridge approaches is progressing satisfactorily, practically all the earthwork being completed. Metal is being procured. The reconstruction and bituminous surfacing of two miles north of Waitara is rapidly progressing. All the foundation -work and culverting has been completed, and ten chains of wearing course *■ laid. Urenui Bridge: A .commencement has been made with the new structure. Taranaki County .section: Approximately one mile of this section south of Lepperton has been metalled and surfaced with bituminous macadam. Eltham County section: A commencement has been made with the widening of one mile of the bituminous surface. Lepperton Junction-Hawcra, via Opunake —Taranaki County section: Earthwork has been completed on the north side of the Tiraaru hill, and. on the southern side good progress is being made with the deviation. Egmont County section: One hundred and fiftyfive chains of this section has been resealed south of Opunake. A further five chains has been surfaced with bituminous macadam at Taungatara. . A commencement has been made with penetration work at the Waimate West County boundary. One hundred and seventy-five chains of water-hound macadam road between the Oari and Taungatara streams has been sealed with road oil, and 119 chains of this length has been given a second coat of bitumen. Rautini stream bridge: The beams for this bridge have been complet'd. Maungahume Stream bridge: The south abutment has been concreted up to water level. New Plymouth Kaimata. —Taranaki County section: Earthwork on the first mile from the New Plymouth borough boundary has been completed, and a commencement made with the laying of the foundation course of metal. Inglewood County section: Ninety chains of bituminous macadam lias been laid eastwards from the Inglewood borough boundary. . Ngatimaru Road. —-Clifton County section: Thirty chains of this road has been surfaced with bitumen. Oilura Road. —At 42J inilct- three chains of heavy re-grading and widening has been completed. F.lthain-Opuimke. — Eltham County section: Three hundred and ninety chains from Opunake to the Taungatara stream have been re-sealed with bitumen, and widening of the formation has been carried out at Taungatara. Rawhitiroa Road. —Eltham County section: The bituminous surface has been widened over a length of one mile. Ihaia Road. —Egmont County section: Forty chains of this road has received, the first coat of road oil.

Manaia-Mount Egmont. — Stratford County section: Ninety-two chains of this road has been given the first coat of road oil.
