TREATMENT OF CANCER

ADVANCE MADE WITH RADIUM.

By Telegraph.—Frees Association

Auckland, Last Night.

The war on cancer was referred to by Dr. W. E. Collins, Wellington, who returned by the Niagara to-day after a visit abroad.

Dr. Collins believed the future held a great prospect of an advance in the treatment of cancer, especially by means of radium. Great strides had already been made in that direction and in the detection of the causes of cancer.

In a few years, there was good reason to hope, mortality from every form of cancer would be much lessened, especially in cases of cancer of the breast, skin and throat.

Cancer had never been regarded by medical men as a contagious disease, nor was it regarded as hereditary. The general opinion was that the disease* was caused by an irritant.
