RACE TRACK EVENTS

MEETING AT TAKAPUNA ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, Jan. 28. The following acceptances have been received for the second day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting: —

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY.

(By “Moturoa.”)

The Takapuna Jockey Club's summer meeting comes to. a conclusion to-day. Form worked out well the first day, and the punters may be similarly favoured today. ' , •

The punters may not look far beyond Good Bov in the Moana Handican.

Royal Form, Glen a Bay and Archene have staying credentials in the Highweight Handicap. # # # #

Subdivision, Leitrim, Arikitoa, Mussie and The Begum will all have friends in the Wynyard Plate, but a good betting race may see more money for Leitrim than for Subdivision. ft ■ ’H' * *

Jolly Money and Lady’s Boy, who would be given chances here, 'are stated to be starters in the Anniversary Handicap, ~d the public opinion may be di ided between High Finance and Melissa. « ft « *

The big race of the day presents a very open appearance. Royal Doulton has won over this distance at Takapuna before and may have a little more support than Flying Juliet and Prodice. Eager Rose ran a surprisingly good race for this distance in the Cup. ft ft ft ft

Carl Idem ran - well on Saturday, and may be better favoured than Gemlight and Eaglet. Eaglet was withdrawn on Saturday in favour of her stable mate Polvxena. « # « ft

Tidal is a good sort, and with ail his weight many contend that he will be too good for Glenstar and Maori Boy. » ft r • * ft

Lady’s Boy was missed from the list of acceptors, but may be a starter here today. A good betting race should see Jolly Money, Lady’s Boy and Ti Tree in good favour. PAHIATUA MEETING TO-DAY. A REVIEW-OF RECENT FORM. (By “Moturoa.”) The Wellington racing carnival may have shed some light on the prospects for the Pahiatua meeting, which opens to-day, and recent form may prove a good guide, though Mr. J. E. Henry’s weights have given the big fields an open appearance. The first race, which is timed to start at 12 noon, will be the MAIDEN RACE. 85 sovs; 6 furlongs 55 yards. Austerity ' Golden Area Waterspear Bicker Imperial Fame Tourist Miss Atlanta Valpine Merry Mixture • .. Mothplane Mint Belle ~ Monetize Mademoiselle St. Melba Refleeto Tunbridge Wee Knight The Ferch Town Section St. Melba has shown some form, and may see a shorter price ..than Mothplane. BALLANCE HIGH-WEIGHT HDCP.

The Swell was not impressive at Ashhurst, and now that Deluge has struck term, he may have better support than Lin Arlington and The Swell.

HAMUA HACK HANDICAP. .125 sovs; 1’ mile 110 yards. (Race starts at 1.25).

The long straight may suit Bissac better than Cloyne and Rakauponga. At 2.10 the field will be sent away for the

PAHIATUA CUP. 225 sovs.; H miles. .

Toxeuma's form has not been consistent, but if caught in a good mood he might be a tough proposition. Henna won w- - Ashhurst, butj the turning course would see her at her belli The Swell may take on the shorter race. Royal Game has ndt been seen at/ his best this season, but he is good when‘right. Anolo should not have been beaten at Ashhurst, and. on his recent form shbtjld run well. Discourse is a fair sort, but Imperial Spark has been running well lately./ A good betting race should see Anolo a firmer* favourite than Imperial Spark . and Toxeuma.

KONINI HACK HANDICAP. 110 sovs; 7 furlo.igs. (Race starts at 2.50.)

Delude, Royal Lineage and Shining Star may be the elect of the pui.ters.

MAKURI HACK HANDICAP. 100 govs; 6 furlongs, d_ yards. (Race starts at 3.35.)

A weak field is likely to see Holus Bolus and Second Thought better fancied than Atholspear.

PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. 135 sovs; 6 furlongs 55 yards. (Race starts at 4.20.)

Epistle is very well at present, and there is likely to be more money for the Polydamon mare than for Millais and Kaihoro. Ridgemount would have to do better than at Ashhurst to beat the above-mentioned trio.

EKETAHUNA HACK HANDICAP. 110 sovs; 7 furlongs. (Race starts at 5.) Full Mark 9 0 Mandarine < 12

Rakauponga, if starred, may be better backed than Shining Star and Volplane.

TURF TOPICS.

Facing' the barrier in Palmerston North for the Matrimonial Stakes on Wednesday will be Miss G. ( Granny ) Maher, the ponular Awapuni trainer, and Alan McDonald, the well-known jockey. Sportsmen will join in wishing the couple a smooth run through the race of life, and all joy and happiness m “double harness.”

Mr. F. J. Gore, the owner, of Perception, is reported to have paid 2000gns. for the Chief Ruler—Gipsy Martian colt, Dalston. Gipsy Martian, as her name suggests, was by Martian —Paroro, by Gipsy Grand, and her contribution to the stud, book is as follows: War Nui, by Maroon and Black; War Ribbon, by Santa Rosa; Hyneta, by Jiymettus; Stormy, by Quin Abbey; Breezy, by Swift Flight; Becalmed, by Nassau, and Dalston, by Chief Ruler. To foal to seven different sires is remarkable.

Amongst the entrants for the Sydney Cup are: Hoylake, Catkin, Raasay, First Note, Besto, Rawhetu, Reonui, Speechmaker and Greengrocer. The A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap has attracted Catkin, Tea Miss, Greengrocer, Gesto, Boston, Reonui and Raasay.

With the sting out of the ground at Trentham on Saturday, Gascony was expected to be in his element, and was backed accordingly. However, the big son of King John was beaten pointless by the second favourite, Cimabue, who always had the measure of the public’s elect. , On Trentham form it is hard to understand how Gascony managed to beat Reremoana at Awapuni. Did Bagby take Gascony .too cheaply, or has Gascony gone off, and Reremoana improved?

Roi do Vai, winner of the Melrose Hack Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, is by Lackham, a son of Roi Herode, out of Jeunesse, a daughter of Polymelus, and is a good advertisement for the imported horse. Roi de Vai’s dam, Miss de Vai, was got by All Red, and her dam, Northern Rose, was by Finland —Rose Shield. Miss de Vai’s previous foals included Rose de \ al and the useful Dcgage, also Arrow de Vai. Her dam, Northern Rose, was a prolific foal-getter, and was the dam of Red Rambler, Miss de Vai, Trentham Rose, Swanee River, Lord Desmond, Rosafonn, Alabama, Pathfinder, Beaumont and Arkansas.

Night Lad, who created a mild surprise by winning the Hopeful Stakes on Saturday, and defeating the unlucky Equitant by the narrowest of margins, was sired by imported Night Raid (by Radium —Sentiment, by Spearmint), and his dam, Moiselle, was by Solferino— Madamoiselle Ixe, by Stepniak. His victory would bo very pleasing to Messrs. J. White and, B. Hughes, who bred both Moiselle and Night Lad. . # ft ft ft

All Rangitikei was on Arikinui in the last race at Trentham, and the fine dividend came as a welcome, surprise. Arikinui, the writer believes, is Maori for Big Chief, or something of the sort, and, being by Chief Ruler, the name is appropriate. Arikinui’s dam, Celinisit, was priced as a yearling, and Mr. W. Dwyer offered GOOgns. for him, but Mr. J. B. Gaisford would not sell under a thousand, and no business resulted. When first raced, Arikinui showed little promise, but he appears to have come good “all of a sudden,’’ and Mr. Gaisford has good reason to feel pleased th t he declined what was at the time considered a very tempting oiler for a youngster by a sire which had then to prove himself.
