CLIFTON ROWING CLUB

REVIEW OF YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. A review of the past year’s activities is contained in the annual report of the Clifton Rowing Club which is to be presented to the meeting on October 16. The report states:— In presenting the club’s 40th annual report and balance-sheet the club wishes to express its satisfaction with the rowing during the season. Five sets of trophies were competed, for, and the members displayed keen interest in th© various events. The committee desires to express its thanks to Mrs. McPherson, the Retailers’ Association and Mr. M. Fahy for their generosity in presenting trophies for competition. The two remaining trophies were presented by the committee. The financial support received from tho public was very discouraging, and it is hoped that better assistance will be forthcoming during the present season. The rowing generally showed a decided' improvement and thanks are due to Mr. F. Richards, the coach, for tho amount of time he has devoted in coaching the various crews. No-., less than 21 medals and four silver cups were won by the various crews. A crew representing the club, comprising R. Butcher, C. Tate, W. Ogier and J. Fowler and A. Chittenden (eox), competed at the New Plymouth regatta on January 1 and, after an exciting contest with the New Plymouth and Aramoho crews, won the McLeod Cup. The club will again be represented next January at New Plymouth, when the McLeod Cup will again be competed for. The Harris Cup, for competition between Clifton and New Plymouth crews, was competed for at Waitara, and after a well contested race "was won by the club’s representatives, consisting of O. Keith (stroke), J. Coulter, M. Sampson, A. Rowe and A. Chittenden (cox). The club desires to congratulate the New Plymouth men on the excellent performance they put up. The club was again represented at tho Wanganui regatta, and although not successful, th© experience they gained will be of considerable benefit to them in the future. The club started with a credit balance of £6 Is Id and, after meeting liabilities amounting to £B2 10s Id, finished up with a credit of £ll 6s 3. The hall account gross takings, including a balance of £49 16s Bd, were £124 15s 2d and the expenditure £9B 17s Ud, leaving a credit balance of £25 17 s 3d, with £4 2s 6d still to be collected. The club’s assets, after deducting £7l 9s 6d for depreciation and loan, £350, stand at £ll3l 16s 9d. Owing to the first portion of the club’s ground lease expiring this month, th© arrangement for a further 21 years’ lease has been satisfactorily made with the club’s and the harbour board’s arbitrators, at a satisfactory rental, and the loan of £350, owing by the club for a term of five years, has also been satisfatisfactorily arranged by the club’s solicitor, Mr. Middleton. The club again wishes to place on record its appreciation of the assistance rendered by the lady supporters, also to the men who assisted at the various carnivals held, and to the Press. The club hopes the public will take a greater interest in the welfare of the club during tho coming season. It is worthy of note that the club has now completed 10 years’ activities.
