PATEA NEWS

BOWLING SEASON OPENS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Patea Bowling Club opened the 1928-9 season on Wednesday last, when visitors came from Waverley, Hawera, Kaponga and Wanganui. The green was in good condition and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mr. W. Paterson, the club president, welcomed the visitors and trusted an enjoyable bowling season would be spent by everyone. He then called on Mrs. P. A. Bourke, in the unavoidable absence of Mrs. W. Paterson, to throw the jack and declare the season open. On behalf of the visitors, Mr. J. Foy, president of the Taranaki Bowling Centre, thanked the Patea Club for their hospitality and paid a warm tribute to the kindness of the Patea ladies in providing afternoon tea. The afternoon’s play resulted as follows : —• White, Raynor, Townsend, Burgess 21 v. Green, McDonald, Champion, W. Paterson 13. Moore, Currie, Thurston, Carey 23 v. McKenna, Wicks, C. Sheahan, Hicks 13. Power, Brown, Dwyer, Goodwin 21 v. Morse, Fitzgibbon, Murdoch, Corkill 12. Wainwright, Scown, Villers, Foy 22 v. Tidswell, J. Paterson, Palmer, P. Bourke 20. Parkes, Cann, Dempsey, Williams 25 v. Glenny, Taylor, De Largey, Linkhorn 20. Canning, Papps, Hussell, Hawkins 29 v. Gibbs, McGahey, T. Sheahan, Kendall BOY SCOUTS. A meeting of the committee of the Boy Scouts’ Association was held on Monday last, the Mayor, Mr. P. S. Finlayson, presiding. Messrs. Pauling, Wainwright, O’Grady, Matthews, Mesdames Masters, White, Geary, Miss T. Gibson and Rev. Martin (hon. see.) were also present. It was resolved to defer the celebration of the troop’s first birthday, and to celebrate their second birthday next year. It was suggested that, if possible, a combined birthday party with the Girl Guides be arranged. The scoutmaster reported that the usual Wednesday parades and two church parades had been held. Scouts were now attending more regularly. Some of the boys had qualified for their cyclists’ badge, and one scout for his artist’s badge. Messrs. Matthews and Finlayson were appointed a visiting committee for the month. It was decided that the troop flag be dedicated in St. George’s Church on October 28, on the occasion of the church parade. PLUNKET AFTERNOON. A very pleasant social afternoon was held by the Patea Plunket Society in the Town Hall supper room last Thursday afternoon, visitors being present from Waverley, Whenuakura, Kakaraniea, Alton and Hurleyville. The afternoon was enlivened by gramophone selections, kindly supplied by Miss N. Gibson and afternoon tea was provided by the society. Mrs. W. F. Shield, president, expressed her pleasure at the large attendance of mothers and in particular at seeing so many bonny babies. This spoke volumes' for the good work of the society in the district. She said that in order to raise funds for the erection of Plunket rooms in Patea, it had been decided to hold a plain and fancy dress carnival in the Town Hall early in Deeem'ner. A Christmas tree was to be held in conjunction with the carnival and gifts to the value of one shilling would be greatly appreciated. PERSONAL. Mrs. L. Torrens returned home on Saturday
