FOR A HEALTHY LIFE MODERATE USE OF ALCOHOL. “The Scientific Press" of London (Faber and Gwyer, Ltd.) have published in their series of “Modern Health Books,” one of Dr. E. T. Burke, who is a recognised authority on alcoholism. Dr. Burke says: “The vast majority of people who take alcohol are by no means ‘alcoholics.’ A glass of beer with lunch is no more alcoholism than a weekly visit to church is religious mania. The taking of a moderate amount of alcohol is a powerful factor in creating sociability, in saving sanity, and in protecting civilisation from boredom. It increases both the health and happiness of many people. There is not, , and never has been, the slightest evidence to support the oft-made assertion that the moderate use of alcohol ia evil, that it causes ill-health and moral deterioration. On the contrary, it has been pro ductive of much mental real, enjoyment, happiness, and good fellov.-shi" and is conducive to a healthy life and bright mental outlook. There can be no doubt that much harm has been done to the cause of real temperance by the prohibition fanatic, who possw-es exactly :he same nervous ins’s ?ii:’y that produces the inebriate."
