WAIWAKA TENNIS CLUB

NEW SPORTS CLUB FORMED. The Waiwaka Tennis Club was brought into being following an inaugural meeting on December 15. It was then decided to purchase, at a cost of £6OO, three-quarters of an acre in Chilman Street belonging to Mr. Reid, and to form three hard courts provisionally on 50 members being obtained. Ten more than that number actually enrolled, so that the excavations for the courts were commenced in January. The first annual report to be presented next Thursday says, in part: — Having received favourable reports the committee decided to put the courts down in Laykold. The first court was completed just prior to Easter. Owing to the continued spell of dry weather the other two courts were not available for play until the middle of June. Gatherings had been held to raise funds for a pavilion and a contract had been let. It was hoped the pavilion would be completed by the end of the month. The membership at the close of the season was 64 playing members —32 ladies and 32 men —eight honorary members and two junior members. The balance-sheet showed the construction of the courts had cost £333 9s. To meet the expenditure a loan on mortgage of £550 and a bank overdraft of £3OO were obtained. Subscriptions totalled £132 14s, and there wag a credit balance of £43 9s 7d.
