PICTURE FILMS IN BRITAIN
NATIVE STARS ARE SCARCE. London, Oct. 4. Commenting on the inauguration of tho compulsory 5 per cent, quota of British films in all programmes, the Manchester Guardian says British quality has certainly improved, but those who are trying to foster the native product are disappointed because no British star of international importance has emerged. British films have not tried to discover them, preferring to take the readymade foreign stars, whose brilliance is often waning. The commercial reason is that producers hope to sell products abroad, but experts express the view that the British industry will not flourish while producers are so lazy.
