MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Eltham Ladies’ Golf Club will hold its closing day on October 12, when competitions will be held. In the playoff for the Sylvia Cup, Miss Wanklyn defeated Mrs. H. Wille by two etrcJkes. The fishing season, according to reports, will probably be a good one as the fish appeal to be in good condition thus early and are fairly numerous. One Eltham angler already secured twentyone good sized fieh in excellent condition. A very successful season was experienced by the St. Joseph’s Tennis Club last year, according to the report presented at the annual meeting, the club having been successful in inter-club competitions. A credit balance of £6 18s 9d is shown, and it is estimated that, owing to the expenditure for the coming season being light, this will be added to considerably this year. The election of officers resulted as follows. —Patron, the Rev. Father Hegarty; president, Mr. J. Waleh; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. H. Ham, M. McGarry, J. Sheehy, M. O’Connor and A. O. Casey; management committee, Mesdames N. Casey, H. Nodder, N. Grenfell, B. Haswell, Misses C. Walsh, A. Cooper, G. Kuscoe, 8. Walsh, D. Kilbride, Mesprs. H. Haswell, H. Boswell, J. Cave, S. A. Morrison, and the treasurer and secretary; secretary, Mr. W. H. Grenfell; treasurer, Mr. F. Quolter. The opening day will be October 11. The market day held recently by the combined Anglican and Presbyterian churches proved most successful, and a ready sale was found for all the goods provided by supporters. A suggestion has been made that an aero club should be formed in Eltham, it being recognised that parts of the district provide excellent opportunity for landing and taking off. No doubt the suggestion is the result of the visit of tha Tasman fliers. It is reported that one resident a short distance from the town is contemplating the purchase of a light machine. For some time two of the Sisters of Compassion from Wellington have been collecting for funds to assist their work at the Home of Compassion at Island Bay, and their self-sacrificing efforts on 'behalf of orphan children and cripples has been recognised by all and sundry in a very substantial manner. A reign of terror is a present existing among the inhabitants of fowl, as many eases of total loss of the providers of the usual breakfast dish have been reported. It is understood the depredations are the work of a pair of fox terriers which appear to work well together. An open season has been suggested for this particular breed of canine. Members of the Eltham Golf Club attending the Wanganui club’s tournament were fairly successful. J. Quin qualified in the championship, while Casey and Stewart did similarly in the Belmont Handicap. In the teams match the Eltham men were second.
