BYRD EXPEDITION WIRELESS

SHORTWAVE MESSAGES RECEIVED. By Telegraph.—Tress Association. Gisborne, Oct. 8. The inauguration of the weekly programmes of wireless messages from members of the Byrd Antarctic experition at present on (board the base ship City of New York, en route for Dunedin, took place yesterday afternoon, the Pittsburg station KDKA being occupied for over two hours reading messages and greetings from all parts of the world to the explorers. Throughout the broadcast Robert Patty, station 2AE Gisborne, and Alex Reid, station 2BE Montreal, amateur operators, stood by to check the results of transmissions. Mr. Reid reported direct to the organiser, Mr. George A. Wendt, of the Canadian Westinghouse Company. KDKA, which has dropped Its wavelength to 25.5 metres, was heard distinctly from the early afternoon, and Clio initial vocal broadcast was considered highly satisfactory. Subsequently Mr. Wendt spoke from KDKA, intimating that the programmes would be continued weekly. He acknowledged the report received from Mr. Patty, and expressed apreeiation of the assistance given by him in the preliminarytests.
