BIRKENHEAD’S MOTHER

ENGLISH PRESS TRIBUTES. London, Sept. 26. “A most courageous mother, who inspired a brilliant son,” is how the newspapers describe Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, mother of the Earl of Birkenhead, Secretary of State for India, who has died at the age of 85 years. It is recalled that Mrs. Smith became a widow in 1883. Her husband, just before that, had been elected Mayor of Birkenhead. He was zealously devoted to his public duties and the full development of his legal prospects. He left the family an income of £5OO a year. There were five children, the eldest being the present earl, who was then 16 years of age.
