GOLFING AT WANGANUI

TARANAKI MEN PLAY WELL COMPLETION OF SECOND ROUND. GREY PLAYS IN SEMI-FINALS. (By Wire —Special from “Stance.”) Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui golf * tournament was continued to-day in good weather, despite one heavy shower at about one o’clock. The Taranaki players again did well, Grey and Chong both surviving the first round and the former getting into the semi-final. Hasell played well against Parkes, but the Wanganui man putted too well. Wade is in the semi-final of the Belmont handicap and is improving every round. He plays O’Callaghan this morning and a good game should result as the Hawera man is playing well and returned a 78 this morning against Syme. The Grey v. F. Quin match was a stern fight with plenty of fluctuations. Grey was putting very well and this turned the scales in his favour. By dint of one putt on four of the first five greens Grey was four up at the fifth, but after the sixth had been halved in fours Quin took a hand in affairs and won the 7th, Bth, 9tl» and 10th, and looked like winning Long Tom, but was stymied, a half resulting. Quin was bunkered at the 12th and Grey took the lead again. The 13th and 14th were halved but Grey won the 15th with a three. Quin sunk a great putt to win the 16th, but a good four gave Grey the 17th and the match 2 and 1. The Chong v. Harrison game was well contested. Chong won the first with a four and the next three were halved. A nice three gave Chong the sth, and he looked sure to win the 6th, but a great approach by Harrison enabled him to take the hole. Chong was short with his approach at the 7th and lost the hole. Harrison squared the game at the 9th. Chong, playing brilliantly, won the next four holes in par figures. However, he took three putts at the Encampment and topped his tee shot at the French Pass and Harrison was only two down. Chong won the 16th and the match 3 and 2. DEFEAT OF HASELL. A. S. Hasell started well against F. S. Parkes and was two up at the 3rd, but Parkes had squared the game at the 7th and was two up at the turn. Hasell won the 10th and 12th and was square again. Parkes won the 13th and 14th with good putts. Hasell had his turn then and won the French Pass and Bunkers Hill. Parkes won the last two holes and the match, 2 up. A good deal of interest centred round the meeting of Grey and Cathro, but Grey’s, almost uncanny powers of recovery and putting eventually turned the scales in his favour. Grey missed a putt of less than a foot on the first green and Cathro won the hole with a four. The second was halved in well played fours, and so was the third, where Grey played a run-up shot. Grey stymied his opponent at the sth and won the hole with a five. Both were nicely on the green at the short sth, but Cathro took three putts. Grey struck trouble at the 6th and Cathro won the hole with a well played four. The sth was halved in sixes after Grey had taken three putts at The Quarries. Grey sliced his tee shot very badly but recovered well with his brassie out ql the rough and found the green with his third. He then proceeded to hole a long putt for a vyin. Cathro put two bal"s out of bounds at the Sth and gave up the hole, leaving Grey 2 up at the turn.

Grey was bunkered at the 10th and Cathro won with a three. Long Tom was halved in fives. Grey made another great recovery at the 12th and won the hole after being bunkered with his tee shot. Grey was astray with his- second at the 13th and Cathro reduced the lead. The Encampment was halved in fours. Grey sinking a 12-foot putt. Cathro topped his tee shot ar, the 15th, Grey put his first out of bounds, and the hole was halved in fours. Grey had a chance of a win at the next but was short with his chip. Grey sliced his tee shot badly at the 17th, but Cathro topped his second and the hole was halved in fives. Grey was now dormy, and when Cathro’s drive came to rest hard up against a tree enclosure the game was over.

SAUNDERS BEATS CHONG. Chong and Saunders had a grim, protracted struggle which went to the 19th green before the Wanganui man triumphed. Chong started by holing a three at the first, but Saunders won the second and fourth. He struck trouble at the sth and lost the hole. Saunders was 1 up at the turn and increased his lead with a nice two at The Slope. Chong won the long 11th with a five, the 12th with a three, and the 13th with a four, and was then 1 up. Chong was short and Saunders through with the second at The Encampment, and a half in five resulted. Saunders squared the match by winning the 15th with a three, and became 1 up by winning the 16th after Chong had been stymied. Chong won the 17th with a four and the 18th was halved in fives. Both hit long tee shots at the 19th, but Chong caught the bunker with his second and Saunders won with a four. Detailed results are: — WANGANUI CHAMPIONSHIP. First Round. L.
