TO-DAY’S RACING EVENTS

AUCKLAND SPRING MEETING IMPORTANT RACES FOR DECISION. DISCUSSION OF CANDIDATES.

(By “Motnroa.”) The Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting opens at Ellerslie to-day, and will be concluded on Monday. Splendid acceptances have been received for all first day’s events, which include important races such as the great Northern Guineas, of 1500 sovs, the Mitchelson Cup, of 1500 sovs, and the Welcome Stakes, of 1000 sovs. In addition there are well-endorsed open sprint handicaps, a hunters’ steeplechase and a hurdle race on to-day’s programme, which is a most attractive one. Good class horses figure in the classic and handicap events, and racing should be first-class. Amongst those entered are horses of the calibre of Star Stranger, Mask, Te Kara, Laughing Prince, The Hawk, Aussie, Commendation, Hoariri, Awarere, Paganelli, etc., and their presence invests the gathering with more than usual interest. Taranaki stables are fairly well represented and interest will be taken in the running of Royal Mint, Mint Leaf, Benzora, Vivo, Oration and Te Atiawa. The Ellerslie tracks are reported to be in fine order, and some spirited contests are anticipated there to-day and on Monday.

The first race, timed to start at twelve o’clock, will be the

The veteran Kawini is justly at the head of the list, and should go a sound race. Llewellyn surprised at Avondale and, with the tracks to his liking, should go well to-day. Potoanui is doing all that is asked of him. When the machine closes the public may decide in favour of Potoanui and Kawini.

G. M. Currie’s cli.f. Episode, by Limond

Kinross, by Psychology —Valley Rose. The Great Northern Guineas has attracted some fine threeryear-olds, amongst the likely runners being Episode, Cashier, Toxeuma and Prodice, and this should be the star tit-bit of the day. On recent form Prodiee may be dangerous, and the Hawke’s Bay winner, Toxeuma, will also have to be seriously considered. Wanganui sportsmen are not satisfied with Episode’s defeat at Wanganui and the Limond filly is expected to give a better account of herself at Ellerslie. However, she likes a firm track. Cashier is in form, and the Paper Money colt will not lack friends. Summed up, Prodice, Episode and Toxeuma will probably be favoured.

SHORTS HANDICAP, Six furlongs.

High-class sprinters will be seen in the Shorts Handicap, with Aussie at the head of the list. Aussie is good and is galloping brilliantly at Ellerslie, but a final pinch might find out his lack of racing. Commendation needs no introduction, and a return of his three-year-old form would see him prominent. In this case, too, the lack of recent racing may be apparent at the end of a fast run race. Hoariri loves the mud and a heavy track will see him well Tacked. Paganelli is brilliant, but may not start if the going is heavy. Benzora and Lady’s Boy also must be remembered. A final selection may see Aussie, Hoariri and Commendation prominent, with Benzora a possibility.

Star Stranger heads the list in the Mitchelson Cup, but he will not be near his best until next month. There appears to be an inclination to make laughing Prince a firm favourite, ami the Australian-bred son of Quantock showed himself up in rosy colours when !he won the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui last month. That race was run over seven furlongs, but the distance should not trouble him, for he won the Autumn Handicap at Wellington in March, finishing brilliantly at the end ©f a mile and three furlongs, when he carried 8.1 and ran the distance in 2min ISJsec. Te Kara, the rejuvenated veteran, revels in soft going, and Mask is a great weight-carrier and a stayer of the first water. "Horses for courses” is the maxim which can be applied to him, and the son of Cowl has run his best races at Ellerslie —but he likes a firm track. Valkon may or may not be over-boomed, but lower down the list the chances of the two Taranaki entries, Royal Mint and Mint Leaf, and Catkin, may be preferred. When the machine closes Laughing Prinee, Te Kara »“d Mask may be the ruling favourites.

Importer is set to give a stone to Clockwork torday, but tie manner in which he won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup indicates that his rise in weight may not stop him. Pompeius was undoubtedly badly ridden last Saturday and, if different tactics are adopted to-day he should do better. Tago San won the Hunters’ Steeples rather easily, but will be meeting better company. Clockwork jumps safely and must not be left out of calculations. Importer may see a short price with Pompeius and Clockwork next in demand.

G. M. Currie’s b g Ceremony, by Absurd —Pennon. F. Earl’s b f Eaglet, by Chief Ruler — Dovelet. W. J. Jorgensen’s br c First Money, by Paper Money—Peronilla. R. Hall’s b g Carl Iden, by Carl RosaIdra. T. H. Lowry’s blk f Clever, by Psychol-ogy-Miss Cute. A. J. McGovern’s b g Supremacy, by Chief Ruler —Lucella. J. and J. Paterson’s ch f Golden Measure, by Surveyor —Pell. A. B. Williams’ ch c Hunting Day, by Hunting Song —Gay. The Welcome Stakes has not drawn a particularly good field this year, and, on Avondale form, Supremacy is likely to be a good favourite. He likes the sticky going. Hunting Day and First Money may be prominent, and there is a whisper about Clever. However, Supremacy may account for Hunting Day and First Money, at least.

GORDON HANDICAP. One mile.

Twenty-three still stand their ground in the Gordon Handicap, a mile event for hacks. Storm Fiend is topweight and has good Avondale form to recommend him. Royal Lineage has been hitting out well on the Ellerslie tracks. Arikitoa, a ■ scrubby-bred son of Warplane, won a double at Avondale and is well forward. Tea Lady and War Officer, too, have figured prominently of late, but when the post is reached Royal Lineage may be prominent with Storm Fiend and War Officer.

FLYING HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.

This race concludes the first day's programme. Benzora and Kaiti claim earlier engagements. Awarere is set at 331 b above the minimum. He has been infusing plenty of sting into his track work, and prior to the Avondale meeting ran a great seven-furlong trial. High Pitch, a veritable mudlark, came to light at Avondale, and Flying Juliet was finishing on to beat Billikins and White Wings, who dead-heated at the Pakuranga meeting. Tinokoa is the elect of the Hannon stable and, if right, may keep the best of them moving. Summed up, it looks' as if Awarere, Flying Juliet and Tinokoa will be favoured.

SOME RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. S. Henderson’s mounts to-day include White Wings, Clever and Marita. H. Wiggins will ride Catkin, Luminary and Ballymoy 11. Valkon’s pilot in the Mitchelson Cup will bo L. Manson. T. Green will be on Staghunter and Imperial Guard. T. Metcalfe has been engaged to ride Royal Mint, and Supremacy. At Carterton, K. Voitre will pilot Callanmore, C. Broughton, Chopin, and A. G. Murray, Teri. CARTERTON RACES TO-DAY. REVIEW OF FIELDS ENGAGED TARANAKI HORSES INCLUDED. On ah average, good fields are carded for the Carterton Racing Club’s meeting to-day, and Handicapper J. Coyle has set the punters a difficult task. Several Taranaki horses claim engagements, and should figure prominently. The day’s racing opens with the

Tcheka and Dainty Ways showed promising two-year-old form and may run prominently. Rillett has been galloping well on the New Plymouth track, and the Acre-Rill filly may upset the pot A bare two-dividend field appears in ths CARRINGTON HIGH-WEIGHT.

Hymgreat and Belgian Queen have shown the best form to recommend them. Then comes the chief event of the day, the WAIRARAPA COUNTY CUP.

David Garrick is given pride of plaee and the Australian-bred gelding may carry the tangerine jacket prominently. Talisker will probably be coupled with him, and the bracket will probably be a warm order. There may be money for Horomea.

GARTERTON HACK. Six furlongs.

This race lias attracted a big field of moderates in which Greymist (Maekie), Ruakura and Tcheka (if reserved) may be in demand.

Only five have accepted for the

BUNNY MEMORIAL. Six furlongs.

High Disdain, a good two-year-old last season, may bo favoured before Vetigern.

TARATAHI HACK, Seven furlongs.

Ruakura again appears on the programme, and, if reserved, may be prominent with Courageous and Rotowhero.

MAUNGARAKI HANDICAP, Seven furlongs.

Of a really good field Royal Game, which won the Connolley Handicap at Wanganui, may be more forward than King Midas and Vigilance. The programme concludes with the

ELECTRIC HACK. Five furlongs.

As most of the acceptors have dual engagements, the stop-at-home punters are left in the dark. Miss Gowrie is slick and so are Dancing Star and Banket.

Despite the enthusiasm shown at the Aero Club meeting on Wednesday evening, flying in New Plymouth is still “in the air.” * # * * When the writer saw Commendation at the Manawatu Hunt meeting, recently the handsome son of Limond and Eulogy carried himnelf well, and his track gallops showed that he was almost ready to race. Since then he has progressed favourably, and pulls up quite sound after each trial, so it appears re®onable to expect that he will be in a condition to reproduce his brilliant three-year-old form at Ellerslie. Commendation was railed through to Auckland last Tuesday night. • # * # Francolin’s withdrawal from the A.R.C Welcome Stakes leaves a moderate field of eight to contest the two-year-old “thousand pounder,” and by no stretch ,of imagination could the best of the octette be compared with previous winners of the race, the records of which contain names to conjure with, like Prince Humphrey, Lysander, Motley, and other smart ones—all big winners at two years and after. Supremacy, a speedy son of Chief Ruler and Lucella, showed a clear pair of heels to Hunting Day in the Avondale Stakes, and he appears to be the most promising youngster in the north. A heavy track will suit him to-day. #** . * Importer has shown form above those engaged in the Hunters’ Steeplechase to-day, and should have no difficulty in reproducing his good form in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Importer formed one of a batch of young horses brought to Auckland in 1922, and though fashionably bred failed to win a flat race. His first success was recorded in the Hunters’ Hurdles at Ellerslie on Juno 30, and after running consistently at the recent Waikato meeting, spreadeagled the Pakuranga Hunt Cup field. By White Knight (a son of Desmond), out of Golden Import by Golden Measure, Importer has been bred in the purple and boasts of two strains of the St. Simon blood. * * * *'

Aswan was lame after the Manawatu Hunt meeting but is now back on the tracks again and is reported to be putting plenty of vim into his work. * # # #

Dobbin is moving well off the Awapuni tracks and, as the tracks will soon be to his liking, the sturdy son of Quin Abbey is likely to claim attention in the near future. • • • «

“Doctor” Knapp, the Awapuni mentor, has taken in hand an attractive sort of two-year-old in Hunting Boy (Hunting Song-Sheila), which was purchased at the Trentham January sales. » « « «

Royal Lineage is good when he strikes form and has been galloping over everything at Ellerslie.

A northern exchange states that Hydras (Hymettus-Straga), dam of those useful performers Phaola and Prodiee, has produced a fine colt foal to Limmond. Both Phaola and Prodiee stay on well, and the outcome of mating with this fashionable sire may produce a first-class proposition.

Potoanui is fencing cleverly at Ellerslie and appears to be equally at homo when asked to jump either hurdles or country. The Potoa gelding has been a consistent stake-earner and is not yet finished.

Paitonu’s form was disappointing at Wanganui, but he will be improved with the racing. He is nominated for the Waverley Oup on Labour day.

The filly by Paper Money from Philomela, Francolin, which ran second in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes, has been scratched for the Welcome Stakes and will take on the McLean Stakes at Dunedin on Thursday.

Vigilance begins well, and the Lord Quex mare may be trouble to the bigger horses in the Cup at Carterton today. The circus-track will be to her liking. • # * « The Napier horseman, E. Manson, will have the mounts on Kaiti, Royal Lineage and Gold Money at Avondale to-day. * * * * A collection of yearlings sent up for auction in 1926, by the imported Duke Humphrey, averaged about fifty guineas apiece, Prince Humphrey fetching 70 guineas. Prince Humphrey, with two wins, three seconds and two thirds for 10 starts as a two-year-old, won £3190 in stakes and, with his Derby win last Saturday, he will have earned well into £BOOO in stakes for Mr. C. G. Maclndoe. TROTTING AT AUCKLAND. ACCEPTANCES ANNOUNCED. •Auckland, Last Night. Acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting are: —- WAITEMATA TROT. TROTTING NOTES. (By “Spectator.”) Acceptances are out for the Auckland spring meeting. The nominations were quite good considering it is the first meeting this season and the weather has been so bad for training operations. • * * # The Spring Handicap, of £lOOO, has drawn a field of ten —a handy size for a good contest. Western King will possibly start favourite as he is a proved two mile horse and has been doing some wonderfully fast trials. Jackie Audu-

bon is a good sort over a mile and a quarter. He has yet to prove he is a good stayer as thia race is two miles. Taranaki will have an interest in this race, as Kohara, a New Zealand Cup candidate, will give an idea of his form.

The Waitemata Trot, a 3.42 class for unhoppled trotters, has a big field of poor quality. If Billy Carbine has improved since last year he would be favoured. Etta Cole is a young Peterwah that can trot fast in private, but not at the races. Kolmar, if well, would be prominent, as he is a better class. Bright Light is said to be very fat and backward.

The largest field is in the Improvers’ Handicap, and the draw for places will count. Nelson Dillon won in Hawera handsomely. He is off the front and is a good beginner. Sunfish and Cornelian are quite good sorts and look well amongst the rest. .

The Stewards’, a 4.37 class of two miles, should be a wonderful race. Several improving horses are engaged, and some are likely to qualify for firstclass company. Harvest Child is on the limit. Last meeting at Christchurch he rau fourth in the good time of 4.32. Freeman Holmes may drive this horse as he is owned by Charlie Lindsay (who was recently found unconscious as a result of being kicked). Taipare is a horse good in the mud. He won the Adams Memorial Cup last June in easy style; also the big race at Hawera the second day. Then we have the Australian Glideaway. She is said to be of good class. Pageant won the big race at Wellington last month when the going was heavy. King Pointer, who comes from O. E. Hooper’s South Island stable, is said to be of New Zealand Cup class. King Pointer, Taipare and Pageant should go well.

The fast mile will be a good race. Jack Shaw, with Native Prince, Jewel Pointer and company, will probably be favoured, with Jackie Audubon in demand. * * » *

The big unhoppled trotters’ race has a few good trotters engaged. The exTaranaki horse Great Change should be prominent if he begins right. Maxegin has great speed but is not a great stayer. Rose Bingen is a great mare and may be handy at the finish.

The last race, the mile and a quarter, has drawn a very large field. Free Advice is a very speedy filly. Taipare and Pageant are in a race before this, but if reserved they may be prominent, TARANAKI TRAINING ITEMS. The weather has been much better for training this week and a number of horses worked fast. Mr. Morse, the caretaker at Hawera, had the roller on the track, which was a great benefit as it evened the surface. Bright Light is always the first horse to work. He is nominated for Auckland and is trotting nicely, but is very backward. It is doubtful if he will make the trip. Kolmar has done a lot of useful work this week. He is not trotting correctly, being slightly 'sore. Kohara gave Dillon Huon about two chains start over a mile and a half. It was one of the fastest work-outs on the Hawera track. Kohara made up his handicap in the first half-mile and they finished together. It was a pleasing effort. Sister Beatrice rau a very fast mile and a quarter. This mare has improved this week. Sam Smith >s giving Master Cute strong work. The horse is rather light. The two Author Dillons are a credit to W. Willetts. Ha is giving them plenty of time for the country meetings. Call Boy is still on his owner’s farm. He is very fat and will take some time to get ready for racing. Richore is working better for J. Bullock. He is a good pacer and moved nicely over a mile and a half. Mokanna has been eased with a cold. This fellow is more like a hunter than a trotter. He galloped a bit in his last work-out. The Real Guy colt iu Bullock’s care has not come on as well as expected. Worthy Bingen, Mr. J. R. Corrigan’s stud horse, works every day. He J", a fine trotter and is in beautiful condition.
