ELTHAM DEFEATS NEW PLYMOUTH Eltham golfers put a strong team in the field against a visiting New Plymouth team at the week-end, and won by 13 games to six, while one game was squared. The detailed scores are (Eltham players mentioned first): — H. Dale and J. Quin, against A. E. Conway and P. Grey, 3 up and 2 (morning), 2 down (afternoon). A. Stewart and H. Oasey lost in the morning 4 and 3, and were all square in the afternoon to G. M. Chong and A. S. Hasel). L. Reeves and L. Abbott lost to H. N. Johnson and T. V. Mackay, 4 an! 3 and 2 and 1. N. Phillips and R. Young were 5 up and 4 in the morning, and lost 2 and 1 in the afternoon to C. H. Wyatt and K. Neal. F. Clcmow and F. Wylds were 5 up and 4 in the morning, and lost 2 down in the afternoon to R. T. McQuade and R. Greiner. C. Millar and P. de Launay were 1 up in the morning and 2 up in the afternoon to I. Thompson and R. H. Quilliam. J. Morton and O. Casey were 5 up and 4 in the morning and 1 up in the afternoon to R. Brokenshire and J. T. Pavitt. R. Dowling and H. Wills were 7 up and 6 in the morning and 5 up and 4 in the afternoon to C. J. Hill and H. Toomey. R. Lee and J. Campbell were 6 up and 5 and 2 up and 1 against C. H. Wynyard and H. W. Kirkby. R. Free and R. Ritter were 4 up an:l 3 in the morning and 7 up and 6 in the afternoon to A. L. Humphries and E. Brokenshire. JUR-BALL BEST BALL HANDICAP. A four-ball best ball bogey handicap played by the New Plymouth Golf Club on Saturday was won by F. L. Sanders and A. G. Johnson with a score of 3 up. Other good cards -eturned were: R. Greiner and R. Boon, all square; J. T. Pavitt and C. H. Fyfe, 1 down; R. T. McQuade and Browning, 2 down; T, V. Mackay and K. Neal, 2 down.
i The scratch score of the Waiwakaiho links has been fixed at 74, according to advice received by the New Plymouth Club. Every course in the Dominion is to have a scratch scorn which will be the basis of a :ystem of national handicapping. GOLFINc IN ENGLAND. NEWS OF IE W* 'LD CONTEST. I'l the first nine holes were halved, then Whitcombe came home wit h the amazing total of 31, nine under bogey, leading 4 up by a round of 68 to 72.
Cotton began the second round superbly, doing the first nine in 32, which squared the match. Whitcombe returned to the attack and took the next five 2,3, 3,3, 3. Both professionals and amateurs among the onlookers were thrilled. Duncan declared Whitcombe had shown he is one of the world’s greatest golfers. Taylor said he had never seen anything like it.
