OPEN-AIR SCHOOLROOMS

COUNCIL OF WOMEN SUPPORT. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Open-air schools were advocated by a strong deputation from the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women which waited upon the Auckland Education Board this morning. The ladies were supported by members of the medical profession who were the principal speakers. Dr. Sweet said that he was in favour of open-air schools. He was amazed that the question had not been tackled in Auckland before. Such schools had been successful in all parts of the world as well as in certain parts of New Zealand. Dr. Bevan Brown said he was an advocate of open-air and sunshine. If it were good for the more delicate children to have more open air it was just fts good for healthy. It tended to prevent disease; it meant a physical gain to the children, and that helped their mentality. He considered that there was far too much tuberculosis in the Dominion, and open-air schools would help to reduce the scourge considerably. Dr. Hilda Northcroft referred to a garden school in Epsom, where opcfiair and sunshine had improved the children’s physique to a great extent. The board decided to defer consideration of the matter for a fortnight.
