AN OPTIMISTIC REVIEW. “Had it not been for the application of fertilisers and the favourable weather of the early spring months, the decline, due to the drought, would - have been far more marked than has been the case, and the position, therefore, is that the dairy 7 industry is reality 7 in better shape for the future than at any 7 previous time in its history.” In the above terms, the executive of the National Dairy 7 Association of New Zealand, Ltd., prefaces its thirty-fourth report, which will be presented at the annual meeting at Palmerston North on June 19. The report shows that the roll now stands at 227, a decrease of 14 members, as compared with-last year: After a reference to price fluctuations, the report proceeds: “The quality’ of the butter manufactured and exported during the year has been well maintained; the proportion of finest being a little better than that of the preceding year. This has not been the case, however, with cheese, because following on the abolition of the Dairy Board’s premium of jd per lb. for ‘finest’ grade cheese, many factories have apparently been content to concentrate on ‘yield.’ rather than on ‘quality,’ with the result that the proporion of cheese grading ‘finest’ has slumped heavily over that ruling in the preceding year.” Concerning the increased duty 7 imposed upon the import of New Zealand butter into Australia, the report congratulates the Hon. W. Downie Stewart upon his firmness in resisting a curtailment of the notice necessary 7 for this to be operative, and adds: “While the Australian dairymen must have full liberty of diction to determine their own course, wo cannot but think it regrettable that prohibitive barriers should l>o erected restricting trade between parts of the F.niplraJ’
