MANAIA NEWS

PUBLIC LIBRARY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The management committee met on Tuesday evening. Presents Messrs T. A. Bridge (chairman), W. Vincent, J. Norton, B. Badland and Dr. Davies. It was decided to defer purchase of any more books until catalogues which had been asked for came to hand. The secretary advised having received subsidy from the town board amounting to £lO. The librarian reported that subscriptions received during the month amounted to £5 15s, and the sale of old magazines realised 2s lid. Reference was made to the number of used books and magazines in hand, and it was suggested that the women’s branch of the Farmers’ Union might be able to dispose of them through their back country branches. It was decided to hold a meeting of the committee to improve the arrangement of the books on the' shelves, thus making it easier for subscribers to make selections. At the same time, a number of old and damaged books could be culled out for ultimate disposal.

WAIMATE FOOTBALL CLUB BALL.

On Wednesday evening the annual ball in connection with the Waimate Football Club was held. The town hall, which had been artistically decorated with club coloured streamers interspersed with greenery by Mrs. A. H. Christie, assisted by Misses E. Christie, M. Burke, and O Vine, and lighted in suitable colour's presented a very pleasing scene. The M.’sC, Messrs L. Hughes and K. Murray, fulfilled their duties in a very efficient manner, and Boulton’s orchestra supplied the music. During . the evening several amusing competitions took place. The spot dance was won by Mr. O’Neill and partner, the Monte Carlo dance by Mr. A. J. Christie and Mrs. R. H. Donald, the balloon dance being carried off by Mr. C. Hucker and Mrs, C. Rothery. The usual sumptuous supper was provided by a committee of ladies and was done full justice to by the company. From a financial standpoint the function was thoroughly satisfactory. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The attendance at the monthly meeting of the Manaia School Committee on Wednesday included Messrs A. Gamlin (chairman), G. H. Edwards, W. Vincent, A. Sadler, John Clague, the Rev. R. Millar and the secretary (Mrs. A. Gamlin). The headmaster’s report showed that the attendance during the month had been as follows: —Primary school. 2(S; average attendance, 240. Secondary school, 27; average attendance, 25. The. electric lighting work for the two extra rooms, as arranged by the Education Board, had been completed, leaving the second and third primer rooms still unprovided for. The chairman had authorised the lighting of the headmaster’s office. The works foreman had estimated the cost of electric heating for the infants’ room at about £4. Arrangements had been made for conveyance of children to the Eltham dental clinic on stated days. Several eases of chickenpox and diphtheria had been reported. All contacts were being excluded from attendance in conformity with the Health Department’s requirements. The suggestion of holding a school concert to supplement school funds had been discussed with the teaching staff, and a date late in July or early in August seemed the most suitable. Further correspondence was received in reference to funds for a shelter shed, and the committee hoped to bo in a position to complete the work in a short time. A sub-committee ,was formed to deal with the matter as soon as funds come to hand. It was resolved that a fund be raised and set apart for the cost of conveyance of children to athletic and other competitions. In the meantime a small committee is to arrange for conveyance of pupils to the Eltham competitions on June 13 and 14. A schedule of duties for the guidance of the caretaker was discussed, and was held over for some adjustments, and to be finally dealt with at the next meeting.

Messrs J. Clague and A. Sadler were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. The action of the headmaster in ordering a heater was approved. The chairman brought up the matter of tendering a farewell function to the committee’s late chairman, Mr. James Dakers, who is leaving the district, and the matter was enthusiastically taken up by all the membeis. It was derided that the farewell ceremony should take place in the town hall on June 22, the details being left in the hands of a sub-committee with power to act. BOY SCOUTS’ ACTIVITIES. A meeting of Boy Scouts was held on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr. A. G. Bennett, complimented Scoutmaster G. Payne on the success of his troop In winning the Ollernshaw Cup at the competitions held in Hawera on King’s Birthday. The first meeting of the recentlyformed Cub Pack was held on Wednesday. Cubmaster Hitchcock, of Hawera, was present. A book entitled “The Great White. South” has been obtained for presentation to the boy showing the most progress in scout law during the year, the presentation to be made on the next visit of the commissioner. A bugle has been donated by Mrs. W. J. Hill, it having belonged to the late Cecil Hill. A letter was forwarded to Mrs. Hill thanking her for her kindness. MANAIA TOWN BOARD. There were present at tha monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board, Councillors Melnnes (ehairman), V. H. Hobday, 11. Mead, J. Hickey and J. A. G. Cosgrove. The foreman's report showed that ordinary routine work, together with tarring and sanding footpaths, had been carried on. A start had been made with reconditioning streets. The county engine had scarified one street and a coat of gravel from the reserve pit had been applied. Mr. R. Franklin waited on the board requesting that macrocarpa trees on Hassard Street should be removed. Advice of the hospital board’s annual levy, showing a slight increase, was received. The health inspector’s report showed that several eases of infectious diseases had been notified in the town area. The department notified that an as-

sessor in the ease of disputed valuations should be appointed, and the clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps. Cr. Mead brought tip the matter of providing areas for tree planting, especially in the Domain, and it was decided that the works committee inspect different vacant sections and report on their suitability, and also inspect and report on the matter of cutting trees in Hassard Street. During the month certain repairs to the pavilion on the domain have been authorised, and it was left to the board to make some alterations to the water supply arrangements. It was decided to issue summonses against all those owing outstanding rates. Cr. Cosgrove gave notice of motion to rescind a previous resolution in reference to the hall piano. GENERAL. Rain fell on 12 days during May, 5.96 inches being the amount registered, making the total for the year to date 12.94 inches.
