(By "Motuioa.”) These winter meetings give us “the jumps.” # • • • fljochella has broken down for the umpteenth time. • • • * Red Fuchsia appears to be the flower’ of the hurdlers. • * « • Glcncanny will never make a jumper; too “canny,” we suppose. • • * • Apache will lead the opposition a wild dance one of these days. *»• ‘ ♦ Wee Marble threw it in for keeps at Ellerslie—threw a “seven.” • * • * Stormy is reported to liave had anything but a smooth passage in the Cornwall. • • • * Mies New Zealand! No, the public did nothing of the sort at the Auckland meeting. Paitonu had the nerve to beat the favourite, G.enross, at Otaki. He lad a neck! • * * • The Otago Steeplechase followed the Biblical quotation; “And a Babe shall lead them.” • • • • Down south they have a horse named The Bailiff; he seems to be always getting into a place somewhere. • • • • A local optician states tiiat the reason why so many punters got cross-eyed in that their chief reading matter is a de'ible chart. CAMERA SHY. At practically every important race meeting one sees photographers out on the race tracks “snapping” the runners as they clear an obstacle, or "taking” a start or a finish. These records, however interesting they may be from a pictorial point of view, are often attended (in the making) by danger to horsemen and horses. An instance is

quoted from Randwick, where, it is alleged, a horse named Really swerved at the sight of a photographer near a fence; crashed into the rails and severely injured Its shoulder and back. The clerk of the course should in all cases keep these over-enthusiastic persons well oat of the line of the racing. ‘ Safety first” is an excellent motto. Mr. E. George, the well-known New Plymouth trainer, left last week on a trip to Sydor
