Winks and her little daughter Joy left during the week for Wanganui, where they will spend a week, afterwards journeying to Taihape for a short stay prior to their return to Hawera. Mrs. E. V. Mrs. Jansen entertained at a most enjoyable tea at “Red Lodge” on Tuesday afternoon last, when those, present were Mrs. H. Washer, Mrs. Meredith, Sirs. Dix (Wanganui), Mrs. C. H. Suisted, Mrs. L. J. Bull, Mrs. A. K. Fyson, Miss McDonald and Miss Hav-Mackenzie. • • • •

Miss Marian Hammerton, of Patea, has returned from Palmerston North, where she gained first prize in the ladies’ humorous song, and second in ladies’ class (New Zealand composer) at the competitions held there.

On ladies’ day at the Fairfield links last Tuesday, the best card for the nonhandicap bogey competition was returned by Miss Ruth Pease, which showed 6 down. The young players showed great promise. The silver and bronze divisions played the first round of a Yankee tournament. competition. On Tuesday next the competition is to be a flag match.

Mrs. Jack Brodie, who was Mrs. D. G. Smart’s guest last week, is now visiting friends in Wanganui, but will probably return to Hawera for a few days before returning to her home in Auckland. • • * •

The Plunket dance held in Patea last week proved a great success, the financial result being that the society benefited to the extent of about £23. Dancing competitions were held and created intense excitement. The judges were Messrs. Hamerton, Haworth and Forster, while the competition winners were: Monte Carlo dance (Mrs. Crabbe’s and Gibson's, Ltd. prize), Miss E. Julian and Mr. Stanton; one-step (Mrs. W. F. Shield’s prize), Miss Nansett and Mr. McLean; waltzing (Mrs. R. Hunger’s prize), Mr. and Mrs. Fred Locker.

Mrs. J. J. Goodwin and Mrs. Thomas, accompanied by Miss Maisie Instone and Misses Joan Thomas and Joyce and June Goodwin, returned to Hawera at the beginning of the week from Palmerston North, where they attended the musical and elocutionary competitions. The young Hawera girls were particularly successful, Miss Joan Thomas securing a first prize in the skipping dance, while in the elocutionary section little Miss Joyce Goodwin came home with four seconds and one highly commended certificate.

Mrs. W. G. Walkley returned from Wellington at the end of last week.

The closing day of the Patea Croquet Club was held on Wednesday, when there was a . very good attendance of local players and a fair number of visitors from Hawera and elsewhere. During the afternoon competitions were played and prizes presented as follows: Ladder: Senior, Mrs. Tait (Hawera); junior, Mrs. Derrett; round target, senior, Mr. Gibbs; junior, Mr. Earp. Angles: Senior, Mrs. Masters; junior, Mr. Exley (Hawera). The president's cup competition was won by Mr. 0. Horner (senior) and Mr. G. Meharry (junior).

Mr. and Mrs. C. Tonkin and little Miss Patricia Tonkin, of Kaponga, are at present on a visit to Auckland.

Mrs. Charlie Bayly . entertained at bridge on Thursday afternoon, meeting her guests in a smart afternoon frock of black georgette and lace. The drawing room where bridge was played was very prettily decorated in autumn-tinted leaves and berries. Among the players were Mrs. Jack Bayly, Mrs. Dew Caplen, Mrs. W. D. Powdrell, Mrs. Raine, Mrs. H. Washer and Miss McDonald.

On Tuesday evening a meeting was convened by those interested in dancing and young people’s amusement in the winter evenings, with the suggestion that a dance club be inaugurated. The meeting was very well attended and those present seemed most enthusiastic, so that every soon probably more will be heard of the newly-formed club.

Miss M. Sutton was hostess at bridge on Thursday evening, when she met her friends attired in a very pretty frock of pink lace. The bridge room was delightfully decorated in chrysanthemums in old gold tints and French marigolds. Among those present were Mrs. Sutton (wearing black crepe-de-chine), Mr. and Mrs. Bowen, Wellington (the latter wearing a smart frock of black taffeta), Mr. and Mrs. Payne (the latter attired in amethyst crepe-de-chine), Mr. and Mrs. H. Washer (the latter wearing a frock of rose and pink crepe-de-chine), and Miss McDonald (georgette frock in black and white design). » • • • -

A most' enjoyable social evening was held in the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Club on Wednesday, a large crowd assembling and enjoying themselves to the full. Billiard and pingpong tournaments and cards were played, while much appreciated items were rendered by Mrs. T. Sunderland, Master Louis Fox and Mr. D. McCormick. • • • •

Mr. and Mrs. Berry, of Gisborne, were visitors to Hawera on Thursday. They have been spending a holiday in Taranaki, mostly on the mountain, exploring and finding delight in the wonders of Egmont’s beautiful reserve. * * » • On Wednesday a delightful afternoon party was given by Mrs. Charles Goodson and Mrs. E. P. Cox at the home of the former, for Mrs. Trevor Goodson (nee Miss Coleen Holder) as a welcome

home on her return from her honeymoon. The drawing room was a picture of artistry with its bowls of beautiful blue and lemon hued flowers, whilst the dining room, where tea was served, was tastefully arranged in decorations of hot-house blooms of pastel shades. The guests were received by Mrs. Goodson wearing a becoming gown of black georgette, and Mrs. Cox, who was attired in a smart georgette frock of blue and fawn. Miss Geraldine Goodson, who assisted her mother, was daintily attired in a pink figured georgette. The guest of honour, Mrs. Trevor Goodson, wore a frock of duchess blue velvet, embroidered in silver. Among the guests were Mrs. Archie Spratt, Mrs. Riddiford, Mrs. Dingle, Mrs. Channing Tonks, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Young, Mrs. C. Freyberg, Mrs. W. O’Callaghan, Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Parrington, Mrs. A. E. Rawson, Mrs. D. G. Smart, Mrs. F. G. Treweek, Mrs. C. 11. Suisted, Mrs.- Raine, Mrs. Corry, Mrs. C. J. Hawken, Miss White, Miss E. Caplen, Miss Dingle, Miss I. M. Glenn, Miss Cony and Miss McLean.

Although the day was not at all promising, about 75 members of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club assembled at the Stratford Mountain House at the weekend for their tramp to the Curtis Falls and the “Enchanted Walk.” The Enchanted Walk, to about 13 members of the party, proved a most unenviable experience, as in the heavy fog that came down they missed their turning, and became lost for several hours. However, fairly well into the night this small party found their way to Dawson Falls house, and gaining the assistance of a lantern, arrived at Stratford and joined their anxious companions little the worse for their experience. ♦ • * »

Miss Herbert Smith, who is at present visiting Hawera, is on a world tour. She started out from the United Kingdom some time ago and has worked her way round. She has a diploma in domestic science and does much newspaper writing while touring. Her New Zealand visit has lasted about six months.
