NEW DREDGING INVOLVED
PROPOSED EASTERN CUT. ESTIMATED TIME SIX YEARS. Reporting on the proposed dredging east of the Newton King wharf necessitated under Mr. Cruickshank’s alternative scheme, the dredgernastcr (Captain 0. F. Mclntyre) stated: — “No. 1 cut.—loooft. by 110 ft. Average depth to be removed, 27ft. Would expect to find ground similar to west side of wharf, where there were large areas of close packed stone below 28ft. to 30ft. low water. Judging from past experience, this cut would occupy at least two years. “No. 2 cut.—l7ooft. by 110 ft. Average depth to be removed, 14Ift. This cut is more exposed and boulders can be expected to become more numerous. Probably not much short of two years. “No. 3 cut. —1700 ft. by 110 ft. Average depth to be removed, 15ft. Still less shelter and still more boulders. One can hardly estimate when this would be finished. Depends on weather conditions mostly; say, two years. “Total time for three cuts under very ordinary conditions, six years.”
