THE PEOPLE'S. FAMILY NIGHT. To-irght is family night at the People's, when “Dearie,” a Master picture starring Irene Rich, is to be finally shown. Irene Rich is east as a modern mother who sings in a cabaret to pay her soli’s way through college, only to meet obstacles almost too great to surmount. In this melodramatic comedy Miss Rich gives a characterisation of delicate and moving beauty. In her support are William Collier, junr., Edna Murphy, Douglas Gerrard, Anders Randolph and Richard Tucker. An excellent programme showing in support includes “Lost Dog” comedy, “Dawn and Dusk in Egypt,” Pathe Gazette and Eve’s Review reels. Commencing tomorrow is “Nevada,” the latest Zane Grey story to be filmed by Paramount Pictures, starring the ideal Western hero Cary Cooper. WORLD-FAMED SINGING ACTRESS. Miss Dawn Assheton, the celebrated artist who recently arrived from America, opened her New Zealand tour at the town hall, Wellington, before a crowded audience and received an ovation. Miss Assheton has rapidly achieved world fame as a folk-song singing actress. She has been acclaimed by the Press and public in Wellington as the most sensational singer England has ever sent forth. Mr. Louis 0. Fania is at present in New Plymouth arranging for her appearance at the Opera House at an early date. EVERYBODY’S. “SMILE, BROTHER. SMILE.” Jack Mulhall is cast as a travelling salesman in his latest for First National “Smith, Brother, Smile,” which opened on a double bill at Everybody's last night. He is supported by Dorothy Maekaill as the little telephone girl

who, an ugly duckling, is soon transformed into a ravishing beauty by means of the special cosmetics manufactured by the firm which her lover represents. How this means is resorted to to obtain an important order, and the consequent revelation of beauty culture methods, appeals to (feminine fans, while the masculine element find much interest in following the. vicissitudes of Mulhall as a salesman. Comedy and pathos are present to delight the picturegoer and render this film one of the most entertaining played in by this very popular starring team. “Come to My House” is the title of the supporting feature. In this William Fox production Olive Borden and Antonio Moreno are co-starred. The story is exceptionally interesting and the beauties of Catalina Island were used for many of the exterior scenes. A. Fox News reel is shown in support. A new musical programme by the orchestra adds to the enjoyment of the pictures. The programme shows again to-night and tomorrow night. There will be a matinee screening for “Smile, Brother, Smile” to-morrow afternoon.
