ONSLOW STAKES PROTEST By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland Racing Club e< nniittee heard evidence to-day regarding a protest by G. A. Reid, owner of Lucy Rose, against W, Scholium’s White Wings being dedared the winner of the Onslow Stakes, on the ground that Scholium did not train his horse himself as declared. The committee adjourned the hearing and decided to give its decision next week. THE KING'S HORSE WINS. SCUTTLE TAKES THE BRANDON. By Telegraph—Press Assn —Copyright. Received April 20, 5.5 p.m. A. and N.Z. Loudon, April 19 Scuttle, the beet filly the King has yet owned, and an entrant in the Oaks, won the Brandon Handicap. This is the King's first racing success of the year. SALE OF STALLION SHEIK. A. and N.Z. Sydney, April 20. The stallion Sheik, which is well known in New Zealand, has been sold to a West Australian buyer for racing there. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) The Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting will be “t Tro»fluun

to-day and on Monday, and considering the smallness of the stakes, very fair first day’s acceptances have been received. • « « •

Racing commences with the Hack Hurdles, 1J miles, a field of eight containing several recent winners as well as improving hurdlers. Vexatious won in good style at Awapuni on Thursday, and should again go well, but danger may threaten from Olympic (who was second at Feilding) and Modern, a winner at Bulls. * * * *

The ten in the Novice Stakes, six furlongs, are not of good class, but Mark Mint will probably be served up a warm favourite. • » # •

A one-dividend field in the Railway Hack Handicap, one mile, does not offer much food for speculation, and Holus Bolus will probably be entrusted with the bulk of the money.

The Waterlea Cup, miles, should be an interesting race with Joy Bird, Black Mint and Oratrix engaged. Oratrix should be suited by the Trentham going, and appears to be very fit now. • ♦ # #

The Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, has attracted at least two good horses, Flying Hero and Duke Abbey. Nothing else has shown form equal to the two top-weights.

A good field should line up for the Opawa Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, and the public may find it hard to sort out the best from Panther (who has won twice recently), Spearmiss, Keddar and Maui. Keddar should be improved by Wednesday’s race. •"• * *

Good class sprinters to the number of ten figure in the Autumn Handicap, six furlongs, and the race looks very open Royal Ceres may finish up f: vourite, but there should be support forthcoming for Miss Pat and Kilperon.

Racing concludes with the Beaver Hack Handicap, six furlongs, a large field including the consistent Moutoa Wonder, Rotowhero and other®good hacks.

Followers of favourites had a . bad run on ’Wednesday at Awapuni, but on the second day the public sorted them out well, and moderate “prices” were attached to the wins of Moa Bird, Mandane. Royal Damon, Cimabue and Flying Shot. « * • •

Riccarton form pointed to Cimabue as a racecourse certainty for the Manawatu Stakes, but the Leighton gelding had to do his best to stall off the veteran, The Hawk, and the six furlongs were left behind in Imin 13 2-ssec —a great gallop. This time has only been bettered once, away back in 1921, when The Hawk won in Imin 13sec, as a two-year-old. * * • »

Mandane made amends for recent unfortunate defeats by winning the Tamatete Handicap, coming at the right end and cutting down that good horse Hynanna. Tresham also finished very fast, and Crown Area stayed on in promising fashion. It was a great race and a great finish, and Hynanna was unlucky to meet a better mare at the weights, the difference being 171 b in favour of Mandane.

Vexatious is admirably named, having the habit of bobbing up unexpectedly and defeating hot favourites. On the first day’s running Mount Marta looked the best of good things for the Kairanga Hurdles on Thursday, and he flattered his supporters until half way up the straight, where he weakened slightly, and Vexatious, coming with a rattle, beat him by a good length.

Interest was taken in the reappearance of the veteran Ngata in a hurdle race on Thursday. The old fellow looked really well, and had a good following. Although weighted with the steadier of 12st 41b he ran a good race and fenced in fine style, eventually finishing fifth. Though now in his twelfth year, Ngata may still prove capable of winning a hurdle race, but it is time the handicappers let him down a bit in the weights.
