ACTIVITIES OF Y.W.C.A.

DECISION TO BUILD HAUL. The Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors met on Wednesday. Present: 'Mesdames Weston (chair), Johnson, Nesbit Smith, Insull, Ray-Ambury, Wyatt, White, List, Davie, Ayckbourn, Misses Haydon, Harrison, Cole and Gillies. The matron reported that there are 18 permanents, while 48 visitors have passed through the hostel, the house being full over Easter. Mrs. Davie reported on the governing body meeting and Citizens’ Council meeting on Saturday. At the latter the girls’ election for Chief Citizen resulted In Miss Rita Meredith being appointed Chief Citizen for 1928. The annual jumble sale was fixed for May 4, in the Workers’ Hall, when there will be a cake and produce stall as well. Tinal arrangements were made for the tableau and talk on India by Miss Gavin, In Tho Chequers to-day (Saturday), when the Mothers’ Club board and governing body will be tho guests of the girls. Basketball matches commence and will be played fortnightly from April 28, and the girls have had permission from the. Central School to have a practice match there to-day. Miss Cole reported that there were only three new financial members during the month, although many had signified their intention of joining. The Mothers’ Club bad held their opening meeting on March 27, and would have the fourth Thursday as their regular meeting day for this winter. The senior club had held enjoyable meetings each Tuesday. The first play of the seasofl ■was read ou April 4 (“Mr. Pim Passes By). The next would be read on May A display of embroidery and laces and a discussion had also proved enjoyable. ' The question of acquiring land with a view to erecting a club room with a semi-basement gymnasium was discussed.

As the work cannot advance further without the space for more physical recreation activities, the advisory committee had advised the Board of Directors to acquire 30 feet of Mrs. Douglas’ property close at hand in Powderham Street. The depth of 125 feet would permit of a useful hall being erected, suitable for hire as well as for use by the girls. With a gymnasium below, the office and. club-room, sufficient room would be available for many more girls to meet on one night, thus leaving more free nights on which other organisations could make use of such central rooms. It was decided, that the property be purchased, the deposit t® be paid by the money accumulated in the special clubroom fund. In order to meet the increased flnansial responsibility more members would be necessary and men -*«.lhavs. asked to assist far a time.
