31 CHAIN TUNNEL PIERCED

LINK WITH THE MAIN TRUNK 20 MONTHS OF CONTINUOUS WORK. STRATFORD RAILWAY PROGRESS. Number one tunnel on the head section of the Stratford-Main Trunk railway was holed through yesterday, the two drives meeting accurately. It is a short distance beyond the Tangarakau camp. There remains a short length of lining to be done. Then the service train line can be laid through the tunnel and the jig line over the hill, which has hitherto served to transport plant and material to the works ahead, can be taken up and utilised at the site of No. 3 tunnel.

Commencing in July, 1926, work on No. 1 tunnel was done only from the western end until October, 1927, when it was attacked from the eastern end also. Its length is 31 chains, and each of the two parties has averaged about li chains of completed tunnel per month. Work has continued day and night, three shifts of men being arranged.
