AWAKINO DOG TRIALS

SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY. The growth of the Awakino Collie Club’s annual trials due to the welldeserved popularity of this well conducted clu'b, is manifested by the fact that owing to the very large entries in all classes the committee 'has been compelled to increase the time to three days instead of two. Owing to the large number of entries and despite the utmost despatch on the part of the officials, it was possible to complete only one class yesterday, and get half through the second class. The trials, .which were held as usual on the property of the club’s patron, Mr. W. D. Thomson, were watched with interest by a large gathering, the conformation of the country providing a trial ground that could hardly be beaten. It gives a good test of the ability of both the shepherd and his dog, whilst at the same time the public is able to follow the work throughout when comfortably seated on the hillside that forms a natural grandstand. They witnessed some splendid work yesterday, the judge (Mr. Body, of Pio Pio) being most enthusiastic regarding the work of the four placed dogs. The majority of the others also put up first class runs. The officials were adepts at their work, keeping things moving steadily. The principal officials were: Messrs A. Sole and N. Bryant (ground marshals); T. Bullock (dog steward); C. Savage (sheep steward); G. Waterson (timekeeper). Mr. L. R. Jones (president) and Messrs C. R. Westfield and J. K. Black (the joint honorary secretaries and treasurers), together with their enthusiastic committee, deserve to be congratulated on the organisation, everything working like clockwork. The first event resulted:
