SPORTING

THE WELLINGTON MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (By "Moturoa.") Weather conditions promise to be favourable for the Wellington R.C. autumn meeting, which opens to-day and concludes on Saturday. Judging by the times recorded this week the tracks are very fast. The first race starts at noon each day. • • • • To-day’s racing opens with the Highweight Handicap, one mile and a-quar-ter, but the eight acceptors are not a brilliant lot. Panorama and Uralla have recent winning form to recommend them, though Bright Day, when well, is a better class gelding. • • '* • The New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, one mile and three-quarters, has not attracted a good field either, but Doree, Satrap and Wild Pigeon have some pretensions to staying ability. • ’• • • A very big crowd figures in the Plunket Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, and much depends upon the scnd-ofl. Recent winners engaged are Mithra, Mooregas and Miss Ransom, and the latter’s brilliant gallop on Tuesday morning may send her out favourite for the race. « e # * The Thompson Handicap, one mile, with 23 acceptors, still looks open. Rapier, Kiosk, Laughing Prince, Joy King White Fang and Bright Glow may all go well, and the dangerous division may include Joy King, Laughing Prince and Blight Glow. » • • # It is hard to estimate the strength of the field in the Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs, but an interesting race will be provided if Reremoana, Prince Humphrey and Kiosk go to the post. * * * * The Silverstream Hack Handicap, one mile, will see a moderate field in action, Keddar, Greengrocer and Wild Work appearing to stand out. Star God will not be a runner, and Clavers has been penalised 51bs, bringing her weight up to 7.5. * # * * Some very smart sprinters are down to contest the Railway Handicap, six furlongs, and the public may go strongly for Money Order, Cimabue, Shirley, Limited and Broad Acre. Of this quintette Limited and Cimabue may be most favoured. < A big field will line up for the Tinakori Hack Handicap, six furlongs, and the race promises to take some picking. Sarchee has run fair races in open company, but has a solid weight, and Scoff (at a difference of 6lbs) may prove better. Subdivision has 51bs extra for winning at Pukekohe, making his weight 8.11. Tripaway has been placed in each of her last four starts. Dimmer has also raced consistently. The recent form of iSeoff, Tripaway and Subdivision appears to entitle them to respect. # # * »

R. Reed will ride Star Stranger and Cimabue to-day. S. Wilson will be on Joy King in the Thompson Handicap, T. Green will ride Money Order, and H. Wiggins will be on Concentrate. Reg. Mackie’s mounts will include Hynanna, Miss Ransom and Sarchee. • • # * Commendation holds the record for the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, but his time (2min is only a fraction better than Duo's 2min 57 4-ssec. The latest Turf Register, however, still lists Duo’s “record” as an Australasian ane! • » * * Wellington advices state that Civility has been withdrawn from the North Island Challenge Stakes. e * * * Roy Reed has ridden three New Zealand St. Leger winners, Rapine (1923), Quiescent (1925) and Star Stranger (1926). Anything that has the services of R.R. in a distance event has a lot in its favour. # * * * Gloaming won t4ie North Island Chailenge Stakes on three occasions, while Achilles and Desert Gold each scored twice The time record for the race is shared by Silver Link and Gascony, both running Imin 25scc. # * * The Martagon horse Martian won the race in 1904, and his son, Warplane, did likewise in 1919. • * * * Dual winners of the St. Ligers Great Northern and New Zealand —are: Afterglow, Duo, Rapine, Ballymena and Commendation. * * * *

Mr J R. Corrigan, of Hawera, has presented the Wanganui Trotting Club with two handsome silver cups winch will be allotted to the winners of the Wanganui Cup and Liverpool Handicap at the forthcoming meeting. Mr. Cornvan’s sporting attitude is greatly appreciated by the members of the Wanganui Trotting Club. TURF JOTTINGS. (By Moturoa.”) Waller Raymer left Wanganui yesterday morning with Lysander, Damaris and Episode, and W. Dwyer took Kiosk to Trentham bv the same train. « * * * King Mart’s withdrawal was caused through a slight accident when enjoying himself in tho paddock. * An interesting gallop recorded -it Wanganui on Monday morning was a six furlong flutter between Lysander and Kiosk, the two finishing together iu 1.16 2-5, which time might have been improved upon. Both four-year-olds look very well. '» * * * _ Tresillian, whoso victory in the Clarendon Handicap .at Hawkesbury, Sydney, was recorded on Saturday, is an a-ged bav gelding by Tressady-Piuia, and he did considerable racing in New Zealand Tresillian won tho Kawakaw.a Cup for Mr. H. C. Nicholls, but nothing else worth recording. * » • * The Riecarton Trainer, J. McComb?, intends doing the North Island meetings with Amorist and Court Jester, wiiuii will race at tho Wellington and Ranvitikei meetings to commence with. MeCombe has tired of the South Island, and may train at Trentham iu future.

Hoariri, bv Antagonist-Country Picnic, is in work again at Ellerslie, in preparation for Easter racing.

Sir George Clifford will be represented at Trentham by Wild Work, Sudden Storm, Quarter Deck, Prickles and Swoopalong. NOTES FROM THE SOUTH. (By “Hurry On.”) Rapier was galloping in rare style on tho track at Riecarton last week and down here they will not have him beate-1 in the Thompson Handicap. He will lack nothing on the score of horsemanship as A. E. Ellis will have the mount. • • • • Sudden Storm is another Riecarton candidate for tho big mile. She might run prominently. Many judges hold a very high opinion of this filly, but she is a bit wayward at the barrier. • • • • Lancer has shown up well in his gallops with his stable mate (Rapier) of late and will be well backed in the High Weight. He is improving quickly and should not be worried by tho distance. Quarter Deck is another likely to run well in the same race. She caused a mild surprise on Tuesday by finishing in front of Sudden Storm in a smartly run mile. « <» « • Battle Colours is rapidly coming back to his best form and his recent track work will assure him of plenty of sup[K>rt in the big race at Waimate. He is a good sort and might reach Town Hall company before long. # e • Another one that has been attracting favourable notice is Honeycomb, and should the imported one leave the barrier correctly he should be prominent. » • • # If Phillipic starts in a hack race the second day at Trentham there will probably be a rush io be on him. The son of Demosthenes will soon 'be out of this clan and Mason lias him in good nick at present. « # • ♦ Satrap is still galloping in pleasing fashion and in the weak field in the St. Leger he might be capable of running prominently. Ho stavs on fairlv well. —• CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. EASTER NOMINATIONS. The following nominations have been received by the Canterbury Jockey Club:— GREAT EASIER HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs. Seven furlongs.—Cimabue, Joy Bird, Solrose, Don Jose, Silver Coot, Set Sail, Hynanna, Stormy, Tresham, Eulalie, Sudden Storm, Cerf, Ring Boy, Black Mint, Joy King, Shirley, Arrow Lad, Kiosk, Gold Brick, Pink Note, Footfall, Lady Desmond, Reremoana, Crown Area, Broad Acre, Beaumont, Money Order, Te Awhina, SJagna Chata, Nincompoop, Rascal, Solferite, Overhaul, Booster, Lady Limond. Finora. GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs. One mile and a half.—Oratrix, Joy Bird, Heather Lad, Don Jose, Set Sail, Hynanna, Stormy, Tresham, Front Rank, Black Mint, Ring Boy, Assurance, Star Stranger, Queen Balboa, Pink Note, Footfall, Lady Desmond, Satrap, Magna Charta, Thorndale, Sir Roy, Rapier, Overhaul, Lady Limmond, Wayward, Battle Colours. RANGITIKEI PROSPECTS. SPLENDID ACCEPTANCES. (By “Moturoa.”) Splendid acceptances were received on Monday evening for the first day of the Rangitikei R.C. annual meeting, tho number totalling 101, or an average of just over a dozen per race. # # # # Of the 17 horses weighted for the Ohakea Hack Hurdles, twelve have been paid up for, the only withdrawal of any consequence being Panorama. With San Pedro, Elysianor, Kilburn, Mount Marta and other good hacks engaged, hurdle races promise to be a leading feature of the meeting. # « # * Twenty out of 25 remain in tho Trial Plate, and this number is the limit for the course. The maidens are as good a lot as has been seen out at recent meetings, and include promising sprinters like Thrift, Fee Simple, Gasnapper and Skyrider. » # * *

The Rangitikei Cup has attracted 10 out of 13 entered for the race, the scratching pen accounting for Huikai, Siaosi and Blimp. Lady Desmond, last year’s winner, holds her place and Atareria, Paitonu, Novar, Kilmiss, etc., will give the public something to bet on. * # # * King Mart, Court Jester and Lady Comet were the only ones to drop out of the Ngatiata Hack Handicap, a good field of 13 remaining in. The acceptors include Royal Acre, Rising Star, Tanagra, and other useful hacks over seven furlongs. • « # • ‘ Only nine were nominated for the Scott Memorial Handicap, but it is satisfactory that seven of the number have been accepted for. In fact, the only withdrawals were Mireusonta and The Raider, which are both reported to be “under a cloud.” at present. As the field now' stands, with Vast Acre, Dobbin, Broad Acre, Bonogne and Miss Pat still engaged, a good race should bo provided. « * * * All have been paid up for in the Pukenui Hack Handicap, though scratchings may be expected on the day, several horses being also engaged in the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap. * * * * A good crowd of 13 are now carded for the Clifton High-Weight Handicap, and they include RuUntli, Paitonu, Oration, Whenuanui, Vesperus, Vivo, Manly and Henna. s # # * Le Champ was the only scratching In the Carnarvon Hack Handicap, 15 being accepted for smart ones like Helotis, Lady Cynthia, Oreades, Eka, White Ringlet, etc., hold their places, giving the race a very open appearance. *’* « * The tracks at Bulls are in good order, but could bo further improved by light rains. OPUNAKE NEXT! (By “Moturoa.”) Taranaki sportsmen are filled with expectation of another good, meeting at Pihama on Saturday next. Acceptances are first class, and everything points to large fields, spirited wagering, and keen finiste®.

The Opunake Cup is an open race, though Yoma and The Swell are said to be popular fancies. « • • • The field of sprinters in the St. Patrick’s Handicap ■would do credit to any club in Taranaki, and the public may find it hard, to decide between Lady Cavendish, Benzora, and several others if they all go to the post. • • * * In minor events Kilburn, Miss Mercia, Gold Dawn, Kawhakina and Flying Snot may be heard of, but tho fields are large enough for surprises to happen iu more than one instance. “It can safely be said that the Opunake Racing Cluib’s course at Pihama has never been in 'better order than at present,” said Mr. J. J. Cahill, who with Mr. J. Brown visited the course yesterday. He said there was nothing of which to complain and the excellent state of the course reflected great credit on the work of Mr. J. Stevenson. Horse accommodation was heavily taxed and if this continued the club would be forced to increase tho provision. For anyone making the trip to the races by train, transport from the Pihama station to the course is to be provided. The secretary, Mr. P. Riley, has everything well advanced for the meeting, so all that is required to secure success is fine weather and a good attendance. WANGANUI T.C. ANNUAL. THE NOMINATIONS. First Day.
