CRICKET GAME ABANDONED
NEW ZEALAND VERSUS REST RAIN PREVENTS FURTHER PLAY. TEAM FOR CHRISTCHURCH MATCH. By Telegraph.—Tress Association. Wellington, Nov. 15. The cricket match between the New Zealand touring team and The Rest, was abandoned on account of continued rain. The New Zealand team for the match at Christchurch v. The Rest will be: Lowry, Dempster, Mills,. Page, Blunt, James, McGirr, Oliver, Alleott, Merritt, Bernau. The Rest’s team will be: Langridge, Newman, Badcoek, Foley, Gillespie, Nixon, Boon, Talbot, Massey, Read, and another to be selected. Kingstone, Gallichan, Bowley, Eastman and Henderson are not available. The players will leave by to-night’s ferry steamer.
It was later stated that Talbot will be unable to play in the match at ChristChurch. As the question of professionals playing in shield matches will be discussed at t'lie Christchurch conference this week, the professionals were interviewed here on the subject and expressed the belief that the interests ot cricket would be 'better served if they did not play, but acted as umpires with the right to give advice to players during the progress of the game. Something of this sort is apparently done in England, In their opinion the players would probably do better if they knew they were'being watched by experts. Wellington, Last Night. J. McEwen, of Canterbury, will play in the Rest of New Zealand cricket team in place of Talbot, who remains in Wellington.
