THE ARBITRATION SYSTEM

TAKING OF EVIDENCE CONCLUDED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 15. The Labour Bills Committee concluded the taking of evidence concerning the Arbitration Bill to-day. Mr. W. Nash, secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, said that between 1890 and 1926 returns from dairy products had doubled. The prices for cheese had gone up 111 per cent., and butter 98 per cent. Comparing 1913-14 prices with those of 1925-26, butter was up 25 per cent,., and cheese 45 per cent. Between 1890 and 1926 wages had been halved. What lie meant was that for every pound realised by dairy products in the former period the dairy workers got 2s, to-day they got lid. The Minister remarked that the figures were not worth the pape™ they were written on. Mr. Nash proceeded that during the war years the employees did not get higher wages in proportion to higher prices. Now the prices were lower it was the desire of the factories to fix the wages in accordance with the world's parity. The committee will meet later ia the week to consider its report.
