Fields’ petition in connection with the election at Hurstvilli. Mr. Nelld. tho Nationalist candidate)! alleged that adviece wiwr received by th® returning officer before *l»a poll was declared that there were a number ot absent votes polled in the electorate. It was said that the day before the poll the returning officer* in Hnrstville had stated that there were SO absent iioteu missing and that unless one candidate got more absent votes than 80 there would be a row. On the Saturday morning tho returning officer refused to announce how many absent votes had been received. The Labour candidate (Mr. W. J. Butler) polled 7039 votes, and Mr. Ncild 7002.
