Stead returned by the L'bmaroa to-day. TRAINING AT TRENTHAM. Wellington, Oct. 18. A strong westerly, with a driving rain, made matters rather unpleasant at Trentham this morning. The rain lasted for only an hour or so and not enough fell to more than freshen up the tracks. A.s practically no visiting horses have arrived there was nothing of great interest. Endorse, with a light boy up, wss sent to do strong pace work, but lie failed to hold her and she did a smart half mile. Chit bowled along the grass over a half mile In 49sec, going well ail tin l way, Gleninnis, picked up by' Priceless, did six furlongs on the grass iu Imiu 21sec.

Historic and Black Eyed Sue did three furlongs on the plough in 38 3-ssee. Kentish lady bit out well in a spruit down the straight. Quantum, on the plough, went comfortably all the way for half a mile in 51 see. Concentrate and Humoresque went hull a mile on the grass in 53Jsee. Royal Picture was going better than Bank Draft over half a mile in 50sec. Teri was not knocked about to run seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 35 sec. Tioga strode along fairly during pace work. Tea Miss was out doing pace work. She is a shapely filly. Grand Knight, with a light weight up, went very fast from the seven furlong post, doing the first two in 25sec, the half-mile in 50sec, and the full distance in Imin 30 3-ssec. As the centre -I the grass gallop was in use he really covered more than seven furlongs. Wild Pigeon accompanied him over the last half-mile and naturally was doing better. Kindly and Oratrix were not hurried over half a mile on the grass in 53 2-ssec. Radion and Black Mint were together at the end of half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Staghunter finished in front of Daintyways over half a mile on the grass in 52 l-ssee. WAVERLEY ACCEPTANCES. Wanganui, Oct. 18. Jackson Hack Stakes.—Marica 8.2. BEAU GESTE SCRATCHED. Christchurch, Oct. 18. Beau Geste was scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 10.50 a.m. to-day. NOTES FROM THE TRACKS. (By ‘'Hurry On.”) There is very little work being dona on the New Plymouth tracks at present, as most of the horses are away. E. George is at Hamilton, J, O’Neill left with his three for Trentham yesterday, and VV. Mantle is doing the Waikato meetings with Manly'. * - * * ♦ R. Johnson is taking Flying Shot and Anolo to Waverley. D. Moraghan has Patrolet, and A. Shearsby has Closefire, engaged at the same meeting. * # # • Te Atiawa, a two-year-old gelding by' Chief Ruler from Wake Up, accompanied Te Monanui and Miss Mercia to Trentham. He will probably have a race before he returns, but is not nearly' ready yet.’ He is a well-grown horse who will probably take time to come good. ® « Taranaki has still five representatives in the New Zealand Gup, namely, Te Monanui, Royal Mint, Yoina, Lady Desmond and Euphonium. The first-named has a good horse's weight, and though he has two thirds to his credit in the Auckland Cup, two miles seems just too far for him, especially at this time of t' y< ar. Nevertheless, should his owner decide to start him he should be in the picture most of the way. If the tra-.-k should, bo holding Royal Mint

would go well, but if the ground is hard, and it prboably will be, the ■son of Catmint will find it Imrd to go with them. * • * * Lady Desmond strikes the eye as a mare with good prospects for the big Ricearton handicap. She is by that fine sire of stayers, Limond, from that good mare, Bronze, and during last autumn won a couple of mile and a-quarter races in good style at the right end. She cor-' ’.mily failed at Ellerslie, but that wasnot her true form. In her only start this year she won at the Manawatu Hunt in good style. She will be a runner at \\ averley, and should she race prominently she will come well into tho mar- # # # * Euphonium lias not been much in the limelight of late, ami last year bis best performance over a distance was a second to Novar in the Manawatu Cup, one and a-half miles. He was staying on well that day, but he does not seem on the improve. He also will be a runner at Waverley. * ' * * ■» Yoma is now getting on in years and does not seem to be quite as good as of yore. Like Royal Mint, he also is partial to a heavy track. He is engaged in the big handicap in Wellington on Saturday and if he is to have any show at Riccarton he will have to put up a bold showing there.
