HOUSING IN BRITAIN
GREAT BUILDING RECORD. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, Oct. 16. Official figures show over a million houses have been built in England and Wales since the armistice. The actual number is 1,024,000. Of these 269,000 were completed in the year ended September 30 last, providing accommodation for approximately 1,000,000 people, and no fewer than 52,201 were finished in September alone. These last two figures easily outdo all previous records. The number completed in September ie not far short of the whole yearly output in the pre-war period. It ie to some extent duo to the fact that the subsidy which was granted to builders was reduced in respect of houses completed after the end of September, so that special efforts w'ej'e made by builders during that month.
The Times considers that the millionth house, wherever it may be, must stand as a silent tribute to th® determined endeavour made by the State, by local authorities and by private enterprise to overtake the arrears of housing accommodation which had accumulated during the war.
