PROFESSIONAL JURIES
ENGLISH SOLICITOR’S SCHEME. Lonflon, Sept. 29. The appointment of professional jurymen a a salary of £lOOO a year, and specially educated in the law of evidence, to travel from town to town, was part of a jury reform scheme suggested by a Halifax solicitor. Mr. J. W. Pickles, in a speech at the. v Socielv’s meeting al Sheffield. “The present system has many defects,” lie said, “including the absence of individual responsibility; the absence of reasons for the jury’s verdict, and the liability of juries to be influenced by prejudice or intimidation.” He deprecated women jurors, especially in murder trials, as being generally toe emotional. Men intending io be jurors should be required to pass a qualifying examination in the law of evidence.
